    Default Some questions regarding vassals

    1) Did you ever have vassals backstab you?
    2) Do vassals actually move their armies to assist me?
    3) How do I order my vassals around, it says I rule them but if I tell them to attack some faction by diplomacy they just refuse to do it

In my last HRE campaign I was in war with Genoa and I had France as ally. After capturing Milan I have offered to Genoa to become my vassal and they've accepted it. French signed ceasefire with Genoa automatically, but our relationship deteriated from good to poor. Later on France declared war to me and Genoa remained neutral

Also, I haven't noticed any economical bust from having a vassal.

Maybe because they were too week being reduced to only one city, Florence.

In my experiance the only thing vassals are good for is giving you lots of money.

In their defense, it is usually LOTS of money.

Has anyone gotten vassals in 6.0? And if, how? I never ever seem to get a chance to vassal anyone. The AI never wants to become a vassal no matter how desperate their situation is, or how much money I offer them.

I got Hungary as a vassal by destroying all but one of their settlements, they had no allies, and after a few turns of sieging their last settlement they accepted my vassal demand. (only after sieging for a few turns though... it also makes sure that they can't make units anymore). Oh and give them a settlement in trade, puny weak vassals are useless Give them a castle if you want them to make armies and attack their bordering factions.. at least I think... we'll see what Hungary does. They'll also upgrade the castle with their uber money cheats so you can take it back later if you want

well... I have a big fat fortress that's spewing out units every round right next to their territory, should give them some good incentive to stay my vassal...

It is lots of money because of the money script put in place. I'm not sure how reliable they are though. They have never been reliable in Total War games if you ask me, and they are far from 'historical' accuracy. Vassals were not looked down-upon as they seem to be here in total war games. It was an honor for many nations to become vassals to others - or so it was portrayed. It's not about losing your independence as much as it is joining a much more powerful nation and effectively gaining their protection...while you fund them and are supposed to assist them in battles.

This is not to say that vassals in history were always looked upon as a 'good thing' by people, but the idea of 'freedom' and 'independence' was rather different back then...especially in a time when all Christian nations were considered vassals to the Pope, the Lord.

Not quite sure how reliable they are...I'm interested to find this out too. From my own personal experience, vassals have ALWAYS backstabbed me, and they have NEVER assisted me - but the same goes for my allies...they never seem to assist me either.

::EDIT:: You have to offer them lots of stuff to become vassals. If you're in a position to offer them vassalship, chances are you have a larger kingdom than they do...so try giving them a region or two...that's what I do anyway. If they remain vassals with me for at least 50 turns, I consider it a success. They act as a bulwark against other nations, and they fuel your economy with the money - it's much better than actually 'owning' those regions...you don't have to manage them

^ I don't know what percentage of their income they give you, but if they only own one city...chances are you won't get much from them. I tend to give them a larger-than-necessary section of my kingdom just because I find it keeps them happier, and it fuels their economy, and thus in this way fuels mine. Like for instance my current Teuton campaign...I conquered Lithuania and reduced them to one settlement...I'm going to end up giving them back their lost territory if they accept my vassalship offer ...if not, well...you know.

I actually prefer to manage my own regions in a kingdom, but there are times when I don't necessarily want to take out an entire faction (like if I'd much rather war on the opposite front), in which case having vassals would be much more beneficial. The size of the territory reflects how much money they give you, so make sure they have at least a decent size trade center if you want lots of money.

To me vassals are worthless. I had quite a few back stab me on more then one occasion.I Just rather just destroy them and be done with it. Is one less faction i have to worry about. If there is one thing that SS 6.0 needs overhauling in is the vassal system. because really is not worth the trouble making a faction a vassal and have them 5 turns later attack you.

I suppose it adds to the gameplay, I mean you want battles right? So you make them vassal, get their money for a lot of turns, they grow strong and attack you again, you have more battles. I like having vassals to around with.

I wonder, is it possible to make the papal states your vassal? hehe that would be awesome.

As you cannot destroy the Papal States, I actually highly doubt it. You could try, though.

@ s0meguy yeah you have a point but i think i can come up with better ideas to give myself more battles to face. I just figure since i already have the faction in question on the ropes why not go for the knock out punch. I just want the vassals to be more effective as allies and so forth. As far as the papals states is concerned i don't think that you can make them a vassal. As far as i know anyways. Maybe somebody here in TWC has. That would be something to
i would like to see for myself.
