    Default The Council of Carthage

I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread here to discuss all things Carthaginian, as well as to bring the members of the Carthaginian hotseat AAR together to formulate plans, ideas and suggestions for the upcoming campaign. Now, raise a glass to Baal, Tanit and Quart-Hadast and let us speak of the glory and profits to come!

I trully believe Carthage has the greatest military in RS, a different army composition can be created for just about any enemy you can fight whether that be the heavy infantry of rome or the phlanxes of macedon and selucia or the horse archers of parthia. And your economy after a few conquests and building of infrastructure is strong and very stable compared to most other factions. my favourite faction without a doubt x

Carthage is one of my fave factions, okay skip that, it's my fave and I have awesome admiration for Hannibal Barca and his campaign against Rome.
Although I've yet to try them in RS.
As mentioned they have a good selection of troops and but without any real "uber" units.
Sure they have their elite units as do any faction, but with Carthage you really need very sound battlefield tactics in the beginning as they're starting troops are generally a bit crap!

Certainly my favourite faction of this period, I suggest you all read my 'A real challenge' thread in the RS forums, it will give you a guide on how best to play Carthage.

Anyway, what're everyones thoughts on temples? Obviously Tanit can be used for military based (Carthage, Carthage Nova) but what other temples are useful? I find Baal very useful in conquering unrest. Tell us what you think!

Carthage's strong economy is a great advantage, especially when you have mines up and running in Iberia. We all know how important money is in maintaining an empire.

I actually really like carthage's starting rota, early liby-phoenicians are very cool looking and great units with a little experience and the caetrati rarely if ever let me down. Numidian Cavalry are perhaps under-rated as i never hear them mentioned on here. These can be a great unit however. I generally deploy them wide out on the wings and let them sweep around the enemies flanks to harrass their rear. Greek hoplites have a terrible time up against them.

With reference to taeloks question about temples; I like a temple of tanit in the likes of Lilybaeum and carthago nova as these are my troop generating settlements. Baal has to be well represented and is my choice for Carthage and Cordoba. Temples of Melquart and Yamm in my trading cities and Eshmun, Kothar and Kathirat for towns with slow population.

Question: Do you ever re-dedicate your temples? For example; you build a level 2 temple of Eshmun in a settlement with low growth until it grows into a city size settlement with good growth. Would you then destroy your temple and replace it with another with better public happiness/military/financial benefits?

I've done that a few times with other factions. Once I've expanded to a few new settlements beyond my current frontier, I'll destroy (for example) a temple of Aries, which gives troop moral bonuses and build maybe one to Demeter to improve trade revenue etc.

    PS nice banner!

Yes i do occasionaly rededicate my own temples, but i always rededicate newly conquered places, i like having tanit in cartage, carthago nova, rome (once you conquer it) and the smithing town in anyplace with iron, its really nice to have rome pumping out 1 gold chevron archers, and 5 silver chevron infantry, then sending them to a city right next door and upgrading armor to gold lvls. it makes outfitting an army for war expedient.
Life goes on, and Carthage keeps killing Romani like its nothing.

What's with all the Carthaginian threads going around ATM? It crazy (I would say it was madness, but since 300 came out, it is impossible to say that without people being silly).

i've spent the last 4 years playing carthage and grc states. i never play as rome. Rome actually took over the world, why would i want to continue in that direction. i find it more fun to do what never happened. ie carthage is one of the best factions for this. for me anyway

You know i do the same thing? The varied legions are a great idea but the faction doesn't appeal to me the way the others do. I love the phalanxes and hoplites of the greek cities and the broad range of indiginous and mercenary troops available to Carthage. For me the challenge of the game, and i'm pretty much just echoing Naeblis here, is to out-do the Roman faction and change the course of history. At least as far as the game is concerned.

In my opinion, Romans and Carthaginians are both strong and interesting factions, just like they were in the real world, which is what makes RS so good. Therefore I've played both.

Then that is indeed great news! Because Carthage was no pushover. and they maybe romes greatest threat atleast at the begining of the republic.

Even I have respect for Carthage. And im a loyal Rome Player. I've lost entire armies to Carthage. And when I mean Armies I mean 4 legions. Due to that One army for me is 4 legions.

Carthage is a very formidable enemy that can destroy anything in its path.

Just so y'all know, the Carthage that many folks are familiar with is a bit different than the Carthage of 217 B.C., RS2's start date. Theres some evidence that we've found will alter what people expect.

Carthage and Iberia are what we've been hammering out lately. Someone will most likely show some goodies here soon of the units for those 2 factions

    Carry on!

my favourite factions i play as most often would be Carthage for the empire building destroying the spanish barbarians and great wars with rome, Rome for its great infantry which can handle just about anything and the role play aspect of creating the roman empire, the macedonians for consolidating the balkans and the the southern greeks also their difficult troop types of the inflexible phlanx armys against hopolites to the south barbarians to the north and romans to the west and last but not least the Selucids ( i know my spelling is awful ) trying to maintain that huge empire and fending off all of your enemies phlanx warfare with the ptolomies and eastern armies of armenia and prthias ha's makes a real difficult starting position.

just can't wait for RS 2.0 the units for these factions look stunning ! i'll be an uber geek over the summer in and out of my summer job and dissertation lol
