Default Over Extension how do I avoid it

Almost every campaign I play I do an amazing job, but I get a certain size I get stomped. Be it Spainards, Germans, Selucids, and many other factions always stomp me and I can't get any reiforcements up to relieve a city. It really pisses me off. Help me!!!

I'm gonna move this to the strategical sub-form known as Battle Planning.

The best thing to do in these circumstances, is leave all the troops in your inner empire with small garrisons, and keep all your armies and good units on your borders or places where there is a risk of amphibious invasion.

What factions do you play as?

At any rate, the best defense is a good offense. The above advice about keeping garrissons only on borders is good stuff. But if you are being overwhelmed by stacks, then take away your enemy's capability to partake in armed conflict. Block their ports, use your navies to transport your armies to where they are most vulnerable. The AI rarely leaves troops lying about in the centre of their empire, which means that those inner territories are not very well guarded. This is especially true for the Ptolemies, Macedons and Seleucids.

Can you be more specific about your problems though? Any particular trouble areas? Screenshots will help.

I agree its good to think of economics, and well in advance; but overextension, as you call it, may be a problem in itself. I've experienced a few times when I was feeling lusty and declare war on a promising front, suddenly everyone is at war with me. Now (mostly) I don't push it. On the other hand, I also learned after getting embroiled with Egypt and Rome at once on two far-flung fronts that it may not be a good idea to carry a war to the bitter end to eliminate an enemy that puts you into a whole new conflict. For example, as the Julii, I don't press north to Trier until I'm good and ready to face the Britons; and I don't rush into Spain until I'm prepared to exploit the Atlantic and maybe Africa, and be sure everything else is secure. Not sure if this helps, because every game is a bit different in the balance between going fast enough to keep ahead and slow enough to avoid scars. In the big economic picture, I try to keep an eye on how far Egypt has expanded, who controls Greece, and if anyone controls northern Europe. Can you give more details of your predicament?

As Artistarchus says, economics really is the key. My Roman campaign in RTR currently sees me embroiled in wars with all but 2 factions on the map (Germany and Bactria). I'm fighting active wars on about 4 different front.

But I will prevail because I have a great economy. That, and the AI sucks. But yeah, economics ftw!

This is a problem that can be easily solved with sound grand strategy and shrewd diplomacy. As u expand ur empire, b sure u can defend it on all fronts should the need arise. Also, attack one faction at a time if possible and either b at peace w/ ur other neighbors or at least make sure they are incapacitated. Defend ur frontiers well, even when not at war. Expanding empires demand solid economies and large armies 2 defend her and continue 2 allow her to expand. When u attack a neighbor, destroy him completely bfore moving on so that he will never rise again. It is also not good to have a solidly garrisoned frontier and a weak interior. This can also b solved by constant expansion, but this requires advanced strategic and administrative ability. Keep trying, ull learn.
