loading problem

so, I just bought medieval 2 gold edition and installed it and everything and it worked fine. Then I closed it and later on tried to load it up again and right after it asks me to select which expansion or whatever to play, it goes to a black screen with the game's loading icon. It just stays there on the black screen and never loads the game.

any ideas on whats wrong and how I can fix it??

my laptop meets all the required specs for the game.
