    Default Ridiculous TTC - $29.05/Hour

Toronto Star - Transit strike averted

    http://www.thestar.com/article/416592

The Toronto Transit Commission has recently been awarded a new deal to avert a transit strike in the city of Toronto. The new deal involves TTC workers to earn $29.05/Hour by the third year.

To me, that's a ridiculous amount to pay someone to drive a bus. The excess spending is incredible. In Canada, we pay workers that much to do the jobs most machines could do, such as collecting coins. This is especially irritating that the City of Toronto always cries poor, yet makes terrible decisions such as this. Although this is more of a local Toronto issue, I thought I could open up the debate to about unions in general, city finances etc.

    1. Is $29.05/Hour a fair salary for TTC workers?
    2. Is the TTC Worker's Union abusing its power?
    3. Should the TTC be an essential service?
    4. Do you support Unions?

Dunno about Canada but I know (my uncle is a retired MTA supervisor) in NYC filling jobs like bus drivers was rather difficult. Few people grow up and go "i wanna drive a bus!" so higher wages almost make it a necessity to find people to fill the jobs. As far as unions abusing power, yeah well that goes hand in hand with being a union

Not true! I always wanted to drive a bus!

Sorry, but I don't get it. Why $28.67 is too much?:hmmm:

It is a medial task job. It employs thousands of people in a critical city. It is an extremely well payed job for the uneducated. The precedent has been set by how powerful their union is, and their pay will only certainly balloon up and up. How is not too much? How is this not dangerous?

The TTC is infamous for extortion.
Some day we'll see them earning as much as nuclear physicists.

GG for them earning that much, but I must say, "screw you" because
now I'll probably have to pay more for their services. Again.

It's only too much if qualified people are willing to do the job for less.
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

You don't have to be qualified to be a train conductor, when there are only 2 buttons you press in the entire day. Stop or Go.

It's unionized silly, there is no wage competition. What an absurd thing to say.

Unionized government workers are overpaid the Western world over for the simple fact that they represent the largest reliable voting constituency, and an extremely viable source of campaign funds...as, no doubt, Obama and Hillary have both found.

    $20.26 Canadian

The TTC should be declared an essential service, with over 1.5 million users. Toronto would literally stop if the TTC goes on strike.

The threat of TTC strike, i guess, is too serious. Without TTC, whole Toronto is gonna be crippled.

Agreed. In certain cases, a group of workers are just too critical to a country or city. When that happens, the Union holds all the power. They can demand more and more and more, and who is to stop them? Nothing can be done against the TTC if they strike. Toronto will simply cave. Again and again and again.

I personally won't cave in. I live next to school. Though many of my classmates who commute will probably die crying.
