Elephant spam how to deal with it?

To put it simply, my brother LOVES elephant spam whenever he got enough money to do so.

When 20 slots is totally filled up with heavy elephants, how the hell do you win against a person like him?

Quite simple really, play at less money. Then he can't afford 20 elephants. You don't have to play at 1 million denarii you know.
Also, another option is to form a noob circle with Greeks. Spartans and Cretans go a long way, upgrade them full and use fire arrows.

It works well with pikemen upgraded as well. And you can also include some javelinmen in the circle.

Archers with fire arrows are in my oppinion the best solution. You won't kill much of them that way, but they should not last long before they start running amok...

The problem about running amok is that there is still the likelihood that they'll just run into your soldiers.

I know they're silly and stupid, but if your brother decides to do the elephant spam thing again, take a few units of incendiary pigs (if you're willing to play rome). One group of incendiary pigs lighting on fire will almost immediately frighting elephants into running amok and make them useless.

And if he sees that, he can easily counter them with archers using flaming arrows. Or place a screen of skirmishers in front of the elephants.
Enough options to counter pigs.

But doesn't elephant spam imply almost exclusive (and excessive) use of elephants? In any case, if he starts to diversify his military with skirmishers and archers, then a well placed charge of heavy cavalry can be used to dispatch the archers, at which time he'll need to invest in pikemen, which can be defeated with more archers, etc etc, so ends the elephant spam.

This also assumes he's anticipating the use of incendiary pigs.

But now you are making rational arguments, which don't have anything to do with the stupidity of an elephant spam. Either people spam elephants or they use 2 units max, no other options. If someone wants to make an elephant spam they won't be considering what the enemy might bring since they can't be bothered making a battle plan anyway.

What's the lol about spamming elephants yourself? The OP wasn't really amused by it either. Elephant spam is annoying for both (or all) players in a game, and essentially a waste of everyone's time.

Any spam is annoying. But it is also fun to kick spammers ass. So if you suspect your opponent to spam units (chariots, elephants, cataphracts) use common sense and beat him. As Selifator said, spammers don't have battle plan and cant use tactics.

Using the flaming missile for onager, though inaccurate after a few hits the elephants run amok
