Default Saudi women 'kept in childhood'

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/mid...st/7358448.stm

I believe the oppression of the women in Saudi Arabia has gone on for far too long, but what can we do, to help them?
Short of war, i mean sanctions? What happens if we don't buy their oil or their bull, we can buy it from Russia or Algeria or Iran.

If we let the damn Ibn Saud family keep their stranglehold on the country its just going to resonate across the world more and more, they have to be made an example, and someone brave has to do it (im not talking about war) and the US i'm looking at you.

Buy oil from Russia or Iran? Surely you must be joking.

By the way, why did you find it necessary to start four topics in such a short amount of time?

the best thing to do is probably applying pressure gradually...promoting more eco and social and cultural ties...

maybe we can hope the next generation of Saudi leaders will be more open minded and allow more women's rights.

other than those, there is nothing foreigners can do.

They aren't going to sever ties with the world biggest oil producer just to stop oppression they really don't care about.

    Besides,

If the U.S buys oil from Russia, the communists have won

    and

If the U.S buys oil from Iran, the terrorists have won

(but seriously this does not need explanation)

They did that in Iraq march 2003.

If the U.S buys oil from Russia, the communists have won
Because Russia is communist and the communist party is in power...

If the U.S buys oil from Iran, the terrorists have won
Because Iran are terrorists, which regularly invade other countries and attack other countries.

I guess we finally see eye to eye.

How did the U.S sever ties with SA?

Or are you refering to Iraq itself?

Actually there is a "Crusader Army" (in Osama Bin Laden's words) in Saudi Arabia already. The American government however has a long tradition of using double standards (or to be vrey selective in applying the same standard if you like ) when it comes to human rights and democracy so don't expect anything positive happening soon.

but if the US buys oil from brazil-- the americas win, and if the US buys oil from itself in shale oil deposits( which we have the most of) the americas win, and the US buys oil from Canada--- the US is far from ed on the energy front.

plus a chap has this new algae, its the perfect biofuel, its byproducts can be eaten as a staple food , the oils are 40% refinable fuel oil, it processes the CO2 it burns as it grows, and it can be set up to grow anywhere in a city, in the desert etc.

lets just hope our people invest properly in this guy and his idea, and we wont buy a drop of oil from anyone ever again !

Wont happen. The people that are in power now, are there due to oil. Its a necessity, and as long as it is one, these people can benefit from it.

I'm pretty sure being Homosexual is, although I think they use beheading in all state sanctioned executions. However, in the middle east, things that people say "Z0Mg das Gay!" here about are culturally normal, hence the kissing on the cheek and hand holding.

i don't think the stranglehold of the Saud family has ANYthing to do with the oppression of women. it's deeply rooted in Saudi society.

Sanctions will not be effective in my opinion, only an inside movements will do the work. No country is crazy enough to engage sanctions upon Saudi Arabia, that had the largest amount of oil and the oil Saudi Arabia compeny is the largest oil compeny in the world.
    Sigh...

Because sanctions or pressure and an Invasion are the same thing are they?
I said US becasue they are the Saudis greatest allies, e.g China-Sudan China is being pressured to sway Sudan.

People are much more willing to listen if you are holding a big stick. By contrast, why would Saudi Arabia listen if there is no danger to themselves

Exactly the mentality of the world, theres no such thing as negotiation or diplomacy or compromise anymore, its just ultimatum.

What we want or war. Obviously that won;t work in this case, so everyone is stumped. Typical.
