Default What is YOUR Carthagian Formation?

    This is my Carthagian Formation.

i play a defensive offense so here it is

all the long pikes are sacred band (i didnt like that they were short spears so
    i modded them a bit)
the left hand side has 2 elite African infantry units
behind my onagers are 2 archer units, and behind my wings are my calvary units, i only have 3 here, but tend to have 4 about half the time, when i have 4 i only have 1 onager unit,

i use the sacred band as my base(anchor) and flank with the Roman copies(cant recall name just this second) while using calvary to harrass missile crews or destroy enemy onager crews (i hate when they destroy my sacred band formations) and use the onagers to kill as many as i can before i engage. then let the archers chew them up a bit more then pound them into the ground. (this has worked for me so far, but want to see what other ppl do as well. (when i have elephants they go out on the right flank, but i dont use them too much, as they are expensive, and i havent figured out how to use them correctly.

My Phalanx is the main battleline; five units of LibyPhoenicians with the intention of holding the bulk of the enemies forces, with Caetrati covering their flanks and attempting to push back the foes flanking force.

Lybian skirmishers infront of the phalanx to draw on the enemy and then retreat behind my formation.

Cavalry and missile troops keep any remaining troops trying to out-flank my line. with units of Iberian spearmen to keep away enemy horsemen.

The general idea is to keep my force from being outflanked and turn the enemies flanks to win the battle.

Here's my 'elite' army outside of Apulania:

    6 Poeni Heavy Phalanx
    4 Sacred Band
    2 Elite African Infantry
    4 Poeni Archers
    3 Sacred Band Cavalry

Phalanx in front, Sacred Band behind to the sides, general in the middle, archers further back, African Infantry on the flanks, and cavalry behind all.

    A view from the back

Dramatic scene as I kill the Roman archers

Legio XV Apollinaris tries to flank me

First they had all their cavalry on my right flank, so i sent mine there in preparation. But the sneaky Romans then sent their cavalry back around to my left while I was getting my cavalry around their infantry into charging position; so I just killed their general instead, while I sent one cavalry unit back to help the sacred band defend the left flank. And in the end the Romans died...

A small pic about my cartharge army. When I can't use high class units, I replace the heavy phalanx with early one's and instead of elite africans I use some light infantry.

While my archers attack the enemy from behinde, my phalanx holdes the line. I always try to outflank my enemies with the Elite Inf and charge my cav in the enemy's back.

never used carthage...but i would use a phalanx of pikemen or spearmen with the royal band at the right end of the line, caeterati or scutarii to defend the phalanx, heavy cavalry on the wings and a couple of archer units...

but...did carthage ever use macedonian style phalanx?

no i dont believe so, but then im not a historical player, so it doesnt matter to me. I just use what i need to win, this is my base formation, but it does change every battle depending upon what exactly i need.

that's because i am quite dubious seeing a macedonian style phalanx in iberia or in numidia!!!

From some the of the books i've read, such as soldiers and ghosts by JE Lendon, the Carthaginians did make use of phalanx tactics. Hannibal himself was a student of Hellenistic warfare.

so that after rolling over the enemy they roll over my own infanrty???

better of all,a classical macedonian phalanx with phalangites and hetairoi...or a roman legion in chessboard formation!
