Default Iwo Jima Vets call for boycott of Time Magazine

Furious World War II veterans called for a boycott of one of America's most influential and respected magazines today over a controversial picture on its front cover.

Next week's Time magazine cover is based on the famous shot by war photographer Joe Rosenthal of marines raising the US flag on Iwo Jima during the bloody battle in the Pacific.

But artists have replaced the flag with a tree to illustrate an article about global warming.

As well as the angry veterans, the doctored image has provoked a huge backlash among younger Americans who have been brought up to honour their flag.

Iwo Jim veteran Donald Mates, 81, said: "It's an absolute disgrace.

"Whoever did it is going to hell. That's a mortal sin.

"God forbid he runs into a Marine that was an Iwo Jima survivor."

Mr Mates was badly wounded and saw his best friend die beside him during the 35-day battle in February and March, 1945.

He suffered 30 years of operations to remove all the shrapnel from his body.

Former platoon leader Lt John Wells, 84, said: "We'll stick a dadgum tree up somebody's rear if they think that magazine cover is going to cure anything."

Tim Holbert, spokesman for the American Veterans Centre, said: "This photo trivialises the most recognisable moment of one of the bloodiest battles in US history."

Time managing editor Richard Stengel defended the magazine's use of the picture as appropriate and serious.

"Our story says there needs to be an effort along the lines of preparing for World War II to combat global warming and climate change," he said.

This is ridiculous for Time to do such, as are the commercials comparing Global Warming to Hitler (comparing fighting Global Warming to D-Day). Something may need to be done by Global Warming, but these people are getting asine and are only going to turn people off.

    That is pretty terrible.
That is like saying someone who died for their country is equal to someone who recycles.

That is just pathetic. Why would someone stick a tree in the middle of a desert island?

On other note, this is a disgrace. They are taking an issue that MIGHT be possible and using it to replace the guys who stopped Japan from conquering Hawaii (and screwing up the world with a military dictatorship). Its like saying someone who rides their bike and recycles is doing equal good and equal sacrifice as the guy who had to run up an island while under fire from artillery and bullets.
Everything the State says is a lie, everything it has is stolen.

State is the name of coldest of all the cold monsters. Coldly it lies; and this slips from its mouth: "I, the state, am the people"

which is why there is such an outrage.

    And rightly so.

It was stupid and disrespectful of the magazine, but "Whoever did it is going to hell. That's a mortal sin." is a kinda odd comment to make.

    LOL, annoying bored vets FTW.

    "Its a Mortal Sin!"

LOL, my ass its a mortal sin - its not even very objectionable. I'm sorry, but these guys fought over and died over an unimportant strip of infertile sand in the middle of nowhere, which didn't affect the end of the war much.

I saw the time magazine cover. Comparing the global issue with a war? Really? What a horrible comparison in the first place. The article went on displaying leaves in place of the American flag. So, reducing our carbon footprint is more important than respecting those that gave their lives? Wow.

I threw the magazine away. No, I did not recycle it. (I wanted to burn it)

Climate change, has serious enough ramifications, serious enough to merit a comparison, more serious then the all ready quasi-apocalyptic possibility of major Coastal cities being under water.

how the scarring of the earth herself is trivial, I know not.

    I blame Barack Obama
As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

    Um...not really.

Um, this is a pretty pathetic act over some fairly simple symbolism. I do not see the problem with doctoring a photo that was a propaganda shoot to begin with.

Nope, however the placing of the flag was done to raise the morale of the Marines on the island.

Well, the first photo was posed. But the Iwo Jima picture everyone knows is a picture of the second flag raising, which was not posed and done only because the first flag was too small and an officer wanted the original as a keepsake. Actually, I met Charles Lindburgh (not the pilot) several times while at military school, who was in the first picture.

Good to see you reporting on that. I always liked that one more. (okay a minnesotan was involved).

This is just idotic, yes global warming is a problem but it's nothing comparable to the threat the Nazi's posed. Or to the threat the Japanese Empire posed. Time Magazine should issue an apology.

the threat of the japanese and nazis was ideological, the threat to the environment because of what we have done to it, is far worse than any trivial ideology. it threatens to make the planet un-liveable. how does an ideological war 50 years ago compare to the complete extinction of species or even humanity itself?

perhaps you should buy a holiday home in tokelau or a coastal strip of the marianas islands and see what kind of a return you get on your investment in 50 years time.

God forbid that someone uses a that picture to connect it with a global issue that could cost the lives of millions. I mean, this is clearly a disgrace. /sarcasm

If anything, these people should be honoured that this picture was used.
