    Creating Land Mass


    as requested.

    (This is a picture heavy tutorial i believe pictures are worth a thousand words and that will make this tutorial easier to digest, so please do not be put off over its length)

    This Tutorial is supported for use with Photoshop, you can use other
    Image editing software as long as it supports layers.
    For this delicate operation you will need the following files


    map_regions
    map_ground_types
    map_heights

    Open these files into photoshop, first thing write down the size of
    map_heights you will need this later.

    Once these files are open select map_regions (the smaller map)
    once you have selected this, then goto the Image menu



    Now this box will appear.



    This is the re-size box for map_regions before changing anythink here
    write down the width and height and now change these values to the one of map_heights the one you wrote down earlier in the drop down box change the option to Nearest Neighbor.

    and it now should look like this



    click OK and map_regions should look like this...




    Ok once you have this click on the move tool, then click on map_regions and drag it upon to map_ground_types



    you should have this...


    (my picture look different to what you actually see on the screen as i have saved these picture in a lower resolution and file type)

    Aline the dragged map_regions with the map_ground_types i have renamed the layer so i can refer to it i named my dragged map_regions layer "map_regions"



    now you have this you will now need to use the move tool again as drag map_heights into the same window you dragged map_regions and Aline it to the others. just repeat the above steps. and remember to change the new dragged layer name "map_heights"

    you should have something that looks like this...



    Ok i something does not look right from then you must go back over over this tutorial

    Ok now we can paint the island i will first paint a new land mass onto map_height this is a gray scale map so i will use 7,7,7 color to paint on
    you can use the eyedropper tool for this and just select a gray color form the map.

    so select "set foreground color" and set your R.G.B
    make sure you have layer "map_height selected"



    Now with your selected gray scale color paint your island on to the map_heights layer



    now this island will be part of the Palermo Province you can add another settlement here if you wanted there are other tutorials that will show you how and are not in the scope of this, now we are going to set the opacity of map_heights to '0' and have a look at our map_regions making sure you have selected the layer called map_regions.

    Now grab the eyedropper tool and select the Palermo region color
    the color value should be RBG 177 142 58. now select the map heights layer again and set the opacity to 40% now reselect map_regions layer grab the pencil tool with your new selected color because we are now going to trace from the above layer onto the map_regions layer
    like this...




    now finish coloring in your island and set map_regions opacity to '40'%
    and select the background layer with actually is the original map_ground_types file, select a color to work with on the map_ground_types file i will use RGB 128, 128, 64 now color over the island
    again.



    Now, set all layers opacities back up to 100%

    and now its time to drag the layers back to their original files , In your layers window of the original map_heights file, select the copied layer (layer 1) and select the merge down option:



    Save it and close this file.

    now select map_regions layer and do the same drag it back into its orignal file making sure they line up before merging down, once merged you will need to resize map_regions back to its original size I.E (Go to Image->Image Size ) mine where ( 295 189) also making sure to keep nearest neighbor selected before clicking on OK once the map_regions is saved you may close this file.

    all thats left is map_ground_types you will need to delete the layers map_heights and map_regions...



    save this file and close, to see your new island you will have t0

    i) start a new Campaign Game
    ii) remove map.rwp and height.hgt

    from the base file.

    and here is the island



    you can place a settlement here or just dump your generals who are rubbish

    Great tutorial ! can you make the tutorial to edit map_features , map_climate, map_heights because its to confusing to me

    Try deleting that resource then delete your map.rwp and restart campaign sometimes to coors mess the trade resources up.

    Great tutorial, but one thing that confuzzled me was, where's the map.rwp and height.hgt? Do they appear once you make the campaign?

    The base folder should contain a map.rwp once you delete this the game should recreate one on success campaign load up, if you are using the new patch for kingdoms i believe the file as moved to the campaign folder, and for the heights this file does not regenerate but its not necessary.

    I have seem to run into a problem where when I click start campaign is doesn't work and instead just crashes back to the single player menu, any ideas on how to fix this?

    Ok i have seen the problem find those lines in the desrc_strat and;

    1) remove the Timber resource (I bet you its the timber on that little island.)
    2) then delete those ports

    as i mentioned the ports lose their alignment and stops the game from loading up after you delete those lines delete your map.rwp and restart the campaign

    The GIMP in its features is the same as PhotoShop, it is just a matter on getting used to the way of getting to them.

    Well, I've got my map finished, but according to my log the game can't create tenochtitlan, where do I need to delete it from in order to establish if there are any other problems?

    Try putting a semicolon in front of every line in your descr_strat file. That stops the game from reading those lines and you can easily 'activate' those lines again.

    Hey J@mes, what version of MII do you have? 1.2? I tried going thru your tut but it didnt work for me

    I cannot really tell what you have done form the log have you created new regions?
    by the looks of things you are using the big map am i right?

    what are you file dimensions?

    Well I only created one region, that which is circled. Yes I am using the big map, and the file dimesions are the same as the pictures above. Right-click and you will see. Maybe it's something in the text files?
