    Need some info.
    Which writer?
    What batch file?
    What error message?
Did you use the "unpack_all" batch file in the tools\unpacker directory?

You are not really helpful by telling me that you downloaded the 1.2 patch. Somewhere along the line something obviously went wrong. This is what the "ReadMe" of the unpacker says:
    - To use the modified files create a batch file in your
    Medieval II: Total War folder

    - In the batch file add the following line

    medieval2.exe --io.file_first

    - NOTE: Due to a timestamp check, the following unpacked files will
cause the game to crash and must be deleted before the game is
    launched:

    data\descr_geography_new.txt
    data\descr_geography_new.db

    - Save the batch file and then launch Medieval II: Total War using the
    newly created batch file.
That should be straight forward. You know how to create batch files?

Else enter the following in the medieval2.preference.cfg file:
    [io]
    file_first = true
You have to set the file to read-only (right click, properties), otherwise the game will remove this entry.
