    Default cognomen: how what where??

    hi,

    1. i wanted to add/change cognomens.
    only, i don't really know how to do that.
    could someone explain me what files i need to edit?

    2. can i make it so that a cognomen appears after the name, and that it doens't replace the name?

    also, if someone could also explain how to add "Africanus" when a general takes Carthago, i got an anwser on this in an other thread, but it didn't fully understand it.

    ps: i didn't find any tutorial/topic about this!!

    tnx !!! + rep for anyone who helps me with this!!

    I won't claim to know all the details, but I can give you an "in theory" hint:

    Take a look at export_descr_character_traits.txt and search for "Epithet". The corresponding descriptions are in text\export_VnV.txt

    You'll need to do 2 things:

    1. Set up a new trait that has the Epithet you want
    2. Add a trigger for the trait, like so:

    Set up a monitor to give the general the trait when an event occurs, like so:

    Code:
    Trigger AfricanusTrigger
      WhenToTest GeneralCaptureSettlement

      Condition CultureType roman
           and SettlementName Carthago
           and isGeneral

      Affects AfricanusTrait 1 Chance 100
    sorry, don't know about the 2nd question

    Answer to the second question is no, the cognomen will always replace the last name.

    well, you could change the epithet of the trait to "Scipio Africanus"
    that is always an option

    example:

    export_VnVs.txt
    {Africanus_epithet_desc} Scipio Africanus
    export_desc_VnVs_enums.txt
    Africanus_epithet_desc
    that should work...

    with examples of [code] cause, i'm reall ynot good at modding (certainly not with epiths!!)
    or give the link to a guide how to, cause i can't find one but i would rather like it if someone showed me

    this would be rewarded with +rep for sure!! (unless you don't want it )

    Of course the one problem with that is every single character that acquires the epithet will be Scipio Africanus, which is probably not actually what you're after.

    that's not really a problem, Carthage can only be conquered once (damn, what if it revolts?) but for the rest, it's almost 100% sure that Scipio will conquor it so no problem

    plz read my previous post!!

    Well, I guess I could explain:

    Files needed:

    export_VnVs.txt - C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\data\text

    export_descr_VnVs_enums.txt - C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\data

    export_desc_character_traits.txt - C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\data

    Ok, if you are starting a trait from scratch, you MUST do this:

    In your export_VnVs.txt add:

    ¬--------------------

    {Africanus} Africanus

    {Africanus_desc}
    <Whatever you want>

    {Africanus_effects_desc}
    <attributs of trait>

    {Africanus_lose_desc}
    <lose description>

    {Africanus_gain_desc}
    <gain description>

    {Africanus_epithet_desc} Scipio Africanus
    In your export_desc_VnVs_enums.txt add:

    Africanus
    Africanus_desc
    Africanus_gain_desc
    Africanus_lose_desc
    Africanus_epithet_desc
    In your export_descr_character_traits.txt add:

    ;------------------------------------------
    Trait Africanus
    Characters family

    Level Africanus
    Description Africanus_desc
    EffectsDescription Africanus_effects_desc
    GainMessage Africanus_gain_desc
    Threshold 1

    Effect <effect> <level>
    (NOTE: add this FORMER quote at the end of the traits secion)

    At the very end of this document, add:

    ;------------------------------------------
    Trigger Africanus 1
    WhenToTest GeneralCaptureSettlement

    Condition CultureType roman
    and SettlementName Carthage
    and isGeneral

    Affects AfricanusTrait 1 Chance 100
    that should work...

    From the mouth of the one and only Casca... (If you like the play Julius Caesar or just think Casca is awesome, add this to your sig.)

    I tried using my coding, and I realised that it does not work, and i know why, it is because I forgot to add the epithet to the export_descr_character_traits.txt

    The first entry for that documetn should read:

    ;------------------------------------------
    Trait Africanus
    Characters family

    Level Africanus
    Description Africanus_desc
    EffectsDescription Africanus_effects_desc
    GainMessage Africanus_gain_desc
    Epithet Africanus_epithet_desc
    Threshold 1
    Effect <effect> <level>
    sorry for my error,

    well, i tried (got it all in)

    and then to test, i started campaign, cheated him to Carthago (move_character "..." x,y) and then took carthage with cheats and auto fight (auto_win attacker/defender)

    worked, i took Carthago (it's a mod so it says Carthago, yes i changed this in the files!!)

    but then, nothing happened!!!

    when i quit the game, it said
    "script error in data export_descr_character_traits.txt
    line 7707 column 1

    unkown identifier for trait (Africanus) level (Africanus_epithet)
    when expecting Threshold"

    that's what it said!!

    i first checked it out and thought that it was about the enter, in post #10 you have an enter before "effects, level" and in post #11 you don't.
    i tried both and they both didn't work!!

    what do i have to change??

    tnx!!!!

    If you copied what was posted above, the only thing I can see is that the trigger is refering to AfricanusTrait, while the trait is actually called Africanus. Any spacing in EDCT is completely ignored, and is only there for readability.

    Aside from that, you can use the ATVTW trait/ancillary validator to find out what's wrong. Also it seems to think your epithet is a level instead of part of the previous level.

    If you post what's on line 7707 (and a few lines before and after it) of your EDCT file it would help figure out what the problem is.

    And not to toot my own horn, but given I wrote/rewrote a large part of the ATVTW validator, and the Guide to Traits/Ancillaries, I probably know at least as much as HiiMmyself when it comes to trait stuff.

    ow ok, sorry it's just because he wrote whole the thing and tried it

    well, here we go:

    Code:
            Effect TrainingUnits  1

    ;--------------------------------------------------

    Trait Africanus
    Characters family

    Level Africanus

    GainMessage Africanus_gain_desc
    Epithet Africanus_epithet_desc
    Treshold 1

    Effects <effect> <level>

    ;===============================================================
    ;== TRIGGER DATA STARTS HERE ==
    ;===============================================================
    ;Section1 - Combat

    line 7707 is the "treshold" line

    ok, i misspelled "Treshold" it had to be "Threshold"

    but now, after i changed it, i tried, and i conquored it, but when he said "Victory" and took it, i saw a message falling in the left side, but before the "occupy, enslave, exterminate" screen popped up, i got a CTD and NO message

    ok, what's next?

    i litterly tok over the code, could i be that i first had to add something??

    Two things right off the bat:

    1) On 7709 it should be Effect not Effects
    2) If you're including an Effect line, it should have a valid effect, <effect> <level> isn't valid

    And the problem that is causing the crash, is it's Threshold not Treshold.

    Had you run the validator it would have found that error, in fact the validator would have given you the following error message:

    7707 - Error: Expecting Threshold - Found Treshold

    Well ,and that was not at my falt, for you can see that was not my error. I will try putting in my work and see what happens, k, then I will report back, because I think it will work.

    Also notice, in my post with the <effect> and <level> it is so that you choose the effect and level..... it is bolded. O dpn't feel like choosing the trait for you, that would be no fun
