Default [M2TW AAR] A New Egyptian Empire

    Introduction
This is my first AAR, so any tips or advice are welcome

    Faction: Egypt
    Campaign Difficulty: Hard
    Battle Difficulty: Very Hard
    1 Year per turn

It is the year 1082 AD.
The Egyptian empire consists of two cities situated on prosperous trade and farming locations alongside the Nile river,
and a castle at Gaza fortifying our position to the north.
There are no immediate dangers to our faction, as our closest neighbors are the Turks to the North and the Moors to the West.
This AAR starts with the death of Sultan Al-Zahir, and deals with the struggles of Egypt to become a powerfull and prosperous nation.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    A New Egyptian Empire

The year is 1082 AD and our Sultan lies dead!

Crown Prince Al-Mustansir is now named Sultan of Glorious Egypt,
and is given a task from the Council of Nobles that would be benificial for our nation should he complete it.

Sultan Al-Mustansir assigns his brother Crown Prince Mubarak the task of first mustering an army from Gaza,
then heading on to take the city of Jerusalem for the Glory of Egypt.

While his brother heads for Jerusalem, the Sultan prepares an army to explore the land south of Cairo,
following the great nile river and taking any rebel settlements that stand in the way.

Map of Egypt And Family Tree as of 1082 AD.

Will the Sultan build a powerful new empire from the ashes of a once powerful nation?
Will he restore Egypt to a state of power which it once was in the days when the Pharoahs embraced Ra?
    Only time will tell...

    A few years later..

The Sultan and a small army consisting of spearmen and archers are marching through the desert, following the coils and curves of the great Nile river when they spot a horse with a soldier atop in the distance.
"Ah great" exclaims a soldier, "It is probably one of our scouts!"
As the figure looms closer, they soon make out that he is indeed an Egyptian scout.

"News for the Sultan!" he shouts, "Let me through!"
The soldiers part way to let the scout through.
"Sultan, I have spotted a rebel fort about 2 days march south of this location. They appear to have a small garrison, so we should be able to conquer them with few casualties!"
The Sultan rubs his beard, looks down for a few moments as in deep thought then says "So be it, we shall lay seige to this fort in an attempt to starve the Infidels out. Should they do not surrender, we will slaughter them and throw their charred ashes into the desert!"

    1088 AD

Nasser, son of the Sultan, comes of age.

1089 AD - Seige of Jerusalem

The rebel forces at Jerusalem have sallied forth to attack Crown Prince Mubarak's seige force!
The odds are stacked towards the Crown Prince though..

After a lengthy battle, Crown Prince Mubarak's forces come off best and conquer the rebel city Jerusalem in the name of the Sultan. The local population is exterminated..

While feasting that night to celebrate the great victory that was had over Jerusalem, a messenger arrives in the hall with great news.
"Sire, the council of nobles was pleased with the actions that took forth on this day, and have gifted the Sultan 4 units of Mumluk Archers which await him on his return to Cairo." says the messenger. He then draws a quick breath, and exclaims..
"Also, when the seige of Dongola is over, the Sultan is leaving Nasser as governer of Cairo whilst he personally leads the attack to take back the rebel middle east!"
"Very well!" exclaims the Crown Prince, "We shall wait here in Jerusalem until such day as the Sultan arrives with fresh reinforcements, so that we may take the holy lands in the name of Egypt!"
"Also sire..." says the messenger nervously, "Was it absolutely nessesary to butcher and exterminate the people of this city?"
The prince stands up and glares at the messenger.
"Leave my hall now or I shall have you thrown to the dogs!" he says in a low growl.
The messenger takes the hint and scuttles away as if he were a cockroach.

    1090 AD
    - Seige of Dongola

Standing over the charred remains of the rebel fort named Dongola, the Sultan barks orders at his troops. "Three units of peasants are to remain here in the fort, the rest will come with me on the way to Jerusalem, where we shall take the Holy Lands in the name of Egypt!"

I think that Egypt is probably one of the easiest to play with, at least until the arrival of the Mongols :-)
England is pretty easy as well.

    1093 AD

It is 4 years since the capture of Jerusalem and the Crown Prince lays awake in bed, unable to sleep.
"Honey, what's the matter?" asks his wife, "You haven't been sleeping properly in weeks."
"I don't know dear, but I think it has something to do with my brother." replies the Crown Prince. "I haven't heard from him in 4 years.. The last I heard was that he had captured Dongola, and was on his way to join up with my forces and help in the capture of Acre."
His wife thinks for a moment, then turns to her husband and says "You know.. You don't have to wait for him. You can go off and capture Acre and take all the glory for yourself."

The Crown Prince sits up in bed.
"You know what.. Acre shall burn by my hand, and not that of my brother. I shall take this castle in the name of Egypt, and people shall speak of my name for centuries to come!"

Our diplomats have managed to forge an alliance and trade rights with our northern neighbors, the Turkish Empire.

    1094 AD

Moussa, son of Crown Prince Mubarak, nephew of Sultan Al-Mustansir comes of age and is sent to govern the city of Alexandria, as both the Sultan and Crown Prince are busy leading armies.

Our diplomats have managed to forge an alliance and trade rights with the Byzantine Empire.

    1097 AD

The force seiging Acre commanded by Crown Prince Mubarak receives fresh reinforcements, including 4 units of Mamluk Archers and Sultan Al-Mustansir himself.

    1098 AD

The Sultan is happily chewing on his pork ribs whilst sitting comfortably in his tent, when a messenger arrives.
    "Message for the Sultan!"
"...Go away!" mumbles the Sultan with a mouth full of pork, "I am eating.."
The messenger continues "I am sorry Sire, but.. this news is urgent!"
The Sultan sighs then turns to the messenger.
"This had better be quick, or I shall send you to take the castle of Acre by yourself armed with naught but a fork!"
"I understand that Sire, but the Pope has called a crusade against Jerusalem! What will we do Sultan?" asks the messenger.
"It is not your job to think boy, and you call this news? I shall destroy any Infidel that sets foot in my lands." says the Sultan with a bloodthirsty glint in his eyes, "The eye of Sehkmet shall cause their hearts to burst into flames. Their charred ashes shall lie forgotten in the desert!"

    1100 AD

The populace of Acre has heard word of Egyptian victories in the area, and has decided to surrender instead of facing the dreaded Sultan and Crown Prince in battle. This was a wise move on their part, as their lives have been spared by the Sultan. Perhaps they heard that any city who opposes the Sultan is exterminated, and decided to surrender out of fear?

The castle falls with no loss of life and is sacked for 4000 florins

Map of Egypt and Family Tree as of 1100 AD

How many nations will declare war on Egypt, and join the crusade against Jerusalem?
Can Egypt defend against such a threat?
Is it possible for an even greater threat to be out there?

THE FATE OF THE SULTAN - PART 1

    1102 AD

Our diplomats have successfully negotiated an alliance and trade rights with Hungary.

    1104 AD

The Council of Nobles has requested that our great Sultan take the city of Damascus for the glory of Egypt.

1106 AD - The road to Damascus

Crown Prince Mubarak enters the tent of Sultan Al-Mustansir and greets him with a handshake.
"Why have you called me here brother?" asks the Prince.
"Mubarak, as you know, I am an old man..
..And as you surely know, you are the Crown Prince"
"Yes?" the Crown Prince asks with a bewildered look on his face.
"So that means, if I were to be most unfortunate and well.. Die.."
continues the Sultan "you would be crowned as the new leader of Egypt."
"Yes that is right my brother" replies the Crown Prince, "But that doesn't explain why you have called me here..."
"Ok, I just have some advice in case I die" says the Sultan.
"As you may know, the Pope has called a crusade against us. Should this one fail we will be sure that there will be another one in future years. The best defense against these threats lies in the city of Antioch on the edge of the holy lands. If you position an army there, (an all cavalry army I must add) we can attack any hopefull crusaders before they reach our lands. If I am to die, please make it your personal mission to take this city in my honour."
"Yes I can do that" replies the Crown Prince, Now may I go back to the television program that I was watching? It's about penguins"
"Yes sure... one more thing.." asks the Sultan nervously "On your way out, could you ask the guard to cook me some bacon for breakfast tomorrow?"
    "Sure bro" replies Mubarak.
    *Crown Prince leaves*

    - The Sultan's army travelling to Damascus.

Our diplomats have successfully negotiated an alliance and trade rights with Venice.

    - Later that year

Our Sultan's mighty army lays seige to Damascus.

    1107 AD

Captain al Mastamsik lays seige to the village of Jedda, gateway to Mecca.

1108 AD - Battle of Jedda

Perhaps it was just excellent luck, or perhaps the village couldn't stand another assault, but our foe surrendered the village to the might of Egypt the very next day.

1111 AD - Seige of Damascus

Word seems to be spreading of the power of the dreaded nation of Egypt, and as a result, the town of Damascus has surrendered to the Sultan.

The Sultan has taken ill as of November 1111 AD and his outlook looks bleak.
The doctors say that he needs a heart transplant operation, as his arteries are clogged from years of eating pork...
...The problem is that heart transplants have a 0% chance of success in the Middle Ages, so I guess this is one battle the old Sultan cannot win.
It is only a matter of time...

    TO BE CONTINUED...

THE FATE OF THE SULTAN - PART 2

    1112 AD - DISASTER

Our faction leader, Sultan Al-Mustansir, passes away in hospital on January 3rd aged 66.

Crown Prince Mubarak is now Sultan Mubarak.

Moussa, son of Sultan Mabarak is now Crown Prince Moussa.

    In lesser news...

Our victory over Damascus has been rewarded with 2500 florins.

    1113 AD

The council of nobles has given our new Sultan the task of taking the rebel castle of Aleppo, perhaps to prove he has the command qualities needed to lead the great nation of Egypt?

Aleppo is beseiged later in the year by Sultan Mubarak.

Our diplomats have successfully negotiated an alliance and trade rights with the Papal States.

    1114 AD

    The Holy Crusade has failed!
This is great news for Egypt, and our lands are safe for the time being.
Maybe our new alliance with the Pope had something to do with this?
    Who knows ...

1115 AD - Battle of Aleppo

After a lengthy battle the Sultan has taken the rebel castle of Allepo for Egypt. He takes great pleasure in maiming and killing the enemies of Egypt, and is reminded of how much his brother loved to torture and kill.

    1116 AD

The council of nobles has rewarded the Sultans capture of Aleppo with 2500 florins.

As the sun sets on the year of 1116 AD, the Sultans eyes are on the city of Antioch in the east. This is the city he vowed his dead brother that he would take. He vows to not return home unless he takes this city for the defense of Egypt, and to honour his dead brother.

Seige hath been layed upon the city of Antioch by Sultan Mubarak, as it was the final wish of his brother Al-Mustansir.

    1119 AD

Jedda is voted "unholiest city in middle east" by TV Week magazine.
(Look at how much money it makes )

1122 AD - Battle of Antioch

The Sultan is awaken from his slumber by the sound of men shouting.
"To arms men! To arms!" cries a soldier.
This was the day he had been waiting for.
The day the enemy sallied forth from the city to attack.
He knew all to well what would happen..
The enemy would charge out and get picked apart by his mamluk archers. His mamluk cavalry would then charge and pick apart the remnants of the enemy army causing them to rout, and then they would be slaughtered like sheep.
"Oh this is all too easy!" he thinks to himself..
He hurriedly puts on his shining armour and joins the rest of his men.
For the battle for Antioch was about to begin!

    The enemy charges forth

The enemy is soon cut down by our heroic cavalry

    The enemy flees

    Our gallant troops celebrating victory

    The Sultan smiles to himself
I have completed my dying brothers wish, and Egypt is once again united and powerfull. More focus will be brought onto improving the economy. Army garrisons will be retrained to cope with any faction that envies our lands. Egypt is safe for the time being, but there are reports of Byzantine spies crossing our borders. We shall keep a watchfull eye on them in the future.

    1124 AD

The Byzantine Empire breaks the alliance and blocks the port of Gaza.
Egypt considers this an act of war. We will consolidate our forces, and prepare to strike swiftly and brutally. The new era of peace was not meant to be..
Perhaps after this faction is annihilated..?

    1128 AD

al Wathiq comes of age. He is the grandson of Sultan Mubarak, and son of Crown Prince Moussa.

He has excellent command for a man of such young age, and will soon be given command of an army to lead an attack against our new enemies, the Byzantine Empire.

    1131 AD

It is the year 1131 AD and the Byzantines have not yet attacked. In the next few years Sultan and grandson will be ready to launch a simultaneous assault and conquer more land for Egypt

Sultan Mubarak is massing his troops near Antioch, and will soon lead an attack against the Byzantine castle of Adana. al Wathiq will soon see battle with his new army of mamluks and mamluk archers by attacking the island of Nicosia.

The conquered chiefs of the Byzantine Empire shall cower beneath the power of Egypt!

    1132 AD

al Mutadid comes of age and is sent to Damascus, should he be needed in any future conflict.

Sultan Mubarak lays seige upon the castle of Adana, where it is rumoured the Byzantine Emperor lives. This will strike a cricitical blow against the empire should we capture or kill their leader, and will open up their lands for Egyptian conquest.

    1133 AD

al Wathiq lays seige to the castle of Nicosia.

    1138 AD

Sultan Mubarak dies at age 77, after a short lived reign. Although his victories were surpassed by the will of his brother, he shall be remembered as one of the greater Sultans of Egypt.
His army laying seige to Adana is left leader-less. If they have any spine they will continue on with the seige, until such time as a replacement is
    found.

The great Sultan Mubarak has been replaced by his son, Sultan Moussa. He is a weak and cowardly man, who is currently governing the city of Alexandria. We hope that his reign will be short lived, and that his son, Crown Prince al Wathiq, will soon lead the armies of Egypt.

    1139 AD

The commander-less army laying seige to Adana has been reached by al Mutadid, and is now under his command.

    Later that year..

The enemy have sallied forth from the castle of Adana after hearing word of the passing of the Sultan, and of the seiging armies new commander. They think that the battle will be easily won, as they are under the command of Emperor John the Watcher, a 10 star general. al Mutadid prepares his new army for the attack of the Byzantine Empire. He beleives he has the courage to win, yet deep down knows that this is only his first battle and it could go horribly wrong..

al Mutadid looks over his troops.

The Byzantine army marches forward under a shower of arrows.

Our Mamluks charge the Byzantine infantry.

The Byzantine Emperor looks on in dismay as cavalry advance on his position.

The Byzantine Emperor is charged by our heroic mamluks.

Ionnas the Honest attempts to flee after seeing his faction leader slain, but is soon captured.

    All Prisoners are executed.

    1140 AD

Another crusade is called upon Egyptian lands.

Nicosia surrenders without battle to Crown Prince al Wathiq. Perhaps out of fear or low morale after the death of their leader at Egyptian hands?

    1141 AD

The Sultans eyes are gazed upon Caesarea, a castle north of Adana. The Byzantine Empire shall be completely and utterly annihilated by the end of the century!

Map of Egypt and Family Tree as of 1141 AD
