    Default Carter-Hamas talks

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/...rss_topstories

Jimmy Carter will be meeting with top Hamas officials in Egypt, and then will travel to Syria to meet Hamas's exiled leader. I don't see why our government and the Israeli government is so up in arms about this, if Hamas is the only impediment to peace, as Condoleeza states, then why not talk to them? I understand that they are terrorists, and we "dont negotiate with terrorists", but this is a special circumstance. Not many terrorist organizations represent a people like Hamas does. Thats said, I don't see what Hamas will say, IIRC their demands are pretty outrageous.

BTW, it seems a majority of Israelis would like their government to talk to Hamas.

Exactly you hit the nail on the head its 80% i believe who want to negotiate peace, Carter does it and everyone drills him in the ass.

I say good luck, even in the crusades they negotiated.

Because they refused to Negotiate in the end, lets face it had they not made peace in the beginning and twenty times in between they would have gone home much sooner.

Well if your talking about the thread about how he wasn't being allowed in to Gaza then I guess.

Carter of course has no authority, but I think it will show many people that Hamas is open to negotiations, and that they won't cut off your head if you come to try and talk to them. I wonder what their demands will be however, because I fear they will demand something outrageous.

show many people? the people who will inherit the white house all agree that enhanced diplomacy is necessary, and the current administration has shown time and again that theyre incapable of or unwilling to listen to or consider any dissenting opinions or criticism of their foreign policy.

so I'm not sure who he's really "showing", if he had more authority or at least the blessing of our current administration, his vacation to the middle east might matter more.

Carter negotiated a lasting peace between Israel and an Arab nation.

Who else can put that on their resume?

thats completely beside the point because he has no authority to negotiate for the united states.

negotiations and contacts by informal organizations can be helpful for future contacts between Hamas and the US government.

He has to negotiate between Israel and the Hamas. What got the US to do with that? For a neutral negotiator it might be advantageous not to be part of a group having interests in the events. I don't think the outcome matters much but given one can't go in and destroy Hamas one might just as well look to find a way to talk with them.

"Sebaceans once had a god called Djancaz-Bru. Six worlds prayed to her. They built her temples, conquered planets. And yet one day she rose up and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying, he said, 'We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?' And she looked down upon him and she whispered, 'Because I can.' "
