Icon3 Advice on My Carthagian Campaign

In my campaign, ive been building up my economy, and general happiness lvl, and have been slowly conquering western africa, and the med shore of Iberia.
Yesterday evening i went after Croton (romans didnt have it, and they were allied with me, but as soon as i took over croton they betrayed me. (i then kicked their BUTTS outta my territory *Heroic Victory* and all 2 dead family members for them. But now im at war with the romani... do i sue for peace? give them croton and get out of itally, till i have the massive armies i need to trash them completely, or do i hold out, ferry armies across my empire and pray i can hold out the 10-14 turns i need to build the armies i need (i really was not prepared for the backstabbing romani pigs) ??
    any advice please

Get out of Italy. Let the Romans get bogged down elsewhere while you consolidate in Africa and Iberia, then you'll have the ability to choose the theater you want to concentrate on.

A picture would help also are u playing 1 turn recruitment?

Really it all depends on do YOU think you can keep hold of south of italy, if not i would recommend getting out. Also how is the campaign in iberia going? do you feel you can spare an army from there to help in italy? again if not get out of there.
If you are playing 0 turn recruitment it would be easier and quicker for you to build and army to help defend, meaning you dont have to withdraw. It sounds like this wouldnt be too much of a problem for you as you say you have built up you economy a fair bit.
Sorry i couldnt be more help, just given you more choices and no answers but we really need a bit more detail. Are the Romans throwing armies at you regularly? etcetc

What I would do is give Croton to Macedon or Epirus or GCS -- let them tangle with Rome, while your men head off to greener fields...

Don't give Croton to the romans!Defend it for as many years you can.Send a few little reinforcements and stop the campaign in Iberia for a wile,so you can concentraite on the romans. If you give Croton for them they give them an economy boost and then they will attack you in Sicily.

i have 0 turn recruit on, and i think i can get 2-3 stacks to croton in 3-4 turns,

i have been giving epirus what i can give them, but they were basically whiped out in greece by the GCS so i dont think they will be around much longer.

and yes the romans have about 8 stacks coming my way

thank you for your quick replies

I would put a detachement of elites(between 3-6 units), jack up the rent and let the Romans come. The longer than you can defend this crumby land with this detachment the more resources that Rome will use in trying to aquire it. The more resources that Rome uses here the less resources it has to spend elsewhere. After a point that you are satisfied that your units have earned there pay, pull them out and send them elsewhere. When you fight Rome you must think dirty, Romans do....lol

Thats the way that I play as well, I'm a money mogul. I would rather save a dime than spend one. If I spend a dime it's always on the best units and upgrades available. I'd rather have coins in my treasure for the rainy day, and believe me, in this game there is always a rainy day.

I'm actually having loads of trouble with my Carthaginian Campaign as well. Playing H/VH, I have literally 0 money to spend each turn, went into minus figures recently and its mainly due to army upkeep (i'm on 1 turn). I have only two full armies, with all my cities having a very minimal garrison. I'm currently trying to destroy Syracuse, however they have elite hoplites and I have light infantry. Obviously their flexibility is a huge advantage, but in a head on clash victory becomes difficult to come by. Currently they outnumber me on Sicily and they can produce troops, I cannot.

    Any ideas?

The money problem plauged me as well in my old Carthage game, but things got better once I had all of Sicily and the coastal cities in Iberia. In my current campaign I solved that problem from the beginning by just abandoning everything west of Carthage on the first turn. It was costing more to maintain the armies to defend those cities than the cities were making. This way I only had to support one stack in Sicily, and waited till I got some Sacred Band to destroy Syracuse. After that I was rich enough to just pour tons of gold into Italy until I conquered the Romans.

Taelok: In Sicily I'd recomend that you just block off the paths to you cities with 'suicide forts' with just one unit in each. Then when Syracuse beseiges them you can pick off their armies one at a time, or outflank them and seize an undefended city.

yes a few, this is what i did, though i had 4 stacks, it may work for you too.

i held the two bridges leading into the central province and fought for the bridges, holding an army in reserve, while loading up syracuse with spies, then when id gotten the syracusians outta syracuse, i rushed it, and in one turn captured it, it affectively killed syracuse, they held out for another 10 turns, but never attacked me again, from then on i was on the offensive with them, and as i had executed the ppl, i had money to pay for the campaign... but before i took syracuse, i was in your position.

If your army is the problem then get rid of it, the generals way! Go to the city that will bring you the most bounty. and take it. In the process lose as many units as possible. At the end of the battle you should have a city and rid of dead weight.

Nice ideas guys. I managed to lure the main, and only, army the Syracusians could field into a battle and won. Catana was taken in the process, so Syracuse is next.

I'll let you know how it goes after this.

    Again, thank you.

...and that's the end of Syracuse. Got a healthy bonus for relocating the population of the city, as well as sacking their treasury. Carthage is now considered the richest state in the entire known world. Good times.

Give it a try. From the discription, it actually appeared that the treasury has a negative impact on law within the city, so from a gameplay perspective it's a good move to destroy it. If you're roleplaying though, maybe not.

Rome, on the other hand, seem to insist on taking Alleria, despite the fact that Epiros are kicking them out of Italy.
