Teachers told to avoid using homophobic terms
    By Bruce McDougall
    http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23551136-2,00.html

TEACHERS are being urged to stop using terms such as husband and wife when addressing students or families under a major anti-homophobia push in schools.

The terms boyfriend, girlfriend and spouse are also on the banned list - to be replaced by the generic "partner" - in changes sought by the gay lobby aimed at reducing discrimination in classrooms.

The Daily Telegraph has revealed NSW schools are being pressured to provide lessons for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and stack their libraries with books and videos covering their issues.

Among the demands are the outlawing of homophobic comments by teachers or students in the playground and a requirement for teachers to receive "diversity training".

Education Director-General Michael Coutts-Trotter emerged yesterday as a leader of the anti-homophobia campaign, opening a Government-backed conference on sexual diversity - That's So Gay.

The Federation of Parents and Citizens' Associations also weighed into the debate, calling for "appropriate literacy materials promoting diversity in families".

The radical shake-up means that families with two mums or two dads will likely be accepted as a normal part of school communities.

Mr Coutts-Trotter said public schools had a responsibility to include children from same-sex couples and forbid any kind of discrimination.

"Happy families come in all shapes and sizes," he said.

"We value diversity and include everyone in the life of the school ... meeting the bare legal requirement is not enough.

"Public education has a responsibility to include ... to strive to make all feel welcome."

Mr Coutts-Trotter said he was aware some teenagers felt, "lonely and abandoned as they come to terms with their sexuality".

He said leadership from students in public and independent schools was an important weapon to support those facing discrimination and "combat homophobia".

"Our schools should be sanctuaries (for students)."

The NSW Department of Education and Training said any attempt to stop same-sex partners from attending a school formal in NSW - as controversially occurred in Queensland - was likely to breach anti-discrimination laws.

The Daily Telegraph also found that the department is already spearheading a major push to win acceptance for gay and lesbian students in public schools.

"Teaching about sexual diversity, tolerance and anti-bullying occurs through the personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) curriculum in all NSW schools - public and independent," the spokesman said.

"In Years 7 and 8 students learn about bullying, including anti-homophobia. This is reinforced in Years 9 and 10 in anti-discrimination topics in the curriculum."

"Same-sex attraction issues" are included in students' lessons on relationships, diversity and discrimination.

A 25-hour course, mandatory for Year 11 and 12 students in government schools, examines "issues relating to sexuality and sexual diversity".

Debate over books used to teach young children about gay lifestyles has been a hot issue in the past.

Two years ago argument became heated over a push to have books such as Jed and His Dads and The Rainbow Cubbyhouse taught in Sydney daycare centres.

Yesterday the Australian Association of National Advertisers announced major changes to its code of conduct banning future advertisements for kids' products from including sexual imagery or implying that children - classed as 14 or under - are sexual beings.
Good on them for having open dialogue, and bad on the article for choosing a controversial title.

That said, what's wrong with husband and wife? When I find the woman of my dreams I want her to be referred to as my wife.

Interested to hear your views on it.

I DOUBLE POSTED AS TO NOT HAVE MY SAY IN THE SAME POST AS THE OP

Also read the full article before posting. I didn't put the article title in the heading to avoid one-hit wonder posters.

I think it's ridiculous. I have a gay member of my family, and my daughter is in year 7 in a NSW grammar school. It's just PC gone mad. What gay person would get offended at the term 'husband' or 'wife' or 'spouse' as opposed to 'partner'?

Married people are husband and wife, spouses, end of story, although of course, when addressing a large group of kids, 'partner' should be used as a matter of common sense. But are they to refer to an individual, a First Lady for example, as a President's 'partner' FFS?

What gets me is there was none of this garbage when I was at school in the 70s and 80s, and yet the world is full of decent, balanced, non-damaged gay people.

And you know, in the last few years I have seen a few teenage boys camping it up so badly it just makes me want to puke. Wiggling their bums when they walk, tossing their hair around and flapping wrists everywhere, lisping and 'oohing' and 'aaahing' etc. Basically acting about 3 times as feminine as your average girl. I mean, where does this overstated stereotypical put-on behaviour come from? Many of these kids tapping about in ballet shoes wearing pink tutus aren't even old enough to understand their own sexuality. What has been shoved into their brains? It doesn't do a kid any favours in the long run, and most gays I know can't stand such 'fairies'.

It comes from schools molly-coddling these kids and telling them they are separate from the rest of humanity and untouchable. That they are special and can act however they like. Well, sure they can, but everyone else at that age can likewise exclude and laugh at their ridiculousness also, even hate them.

I have no problem with educating against homophobia - it's got to be a positive. But it should revolve around BULLYING (including offensive words) and acceptance, not the censoring of completely inoffensive words.

FFS teachers and curriculum makers are supposed to be educated and understand the dangers of imposing limits on the use of (non-offensive) words in the name of social engineering. Orwell?

I have no problem with that part.

I think the modern education system in most Western countries is bankrupt. One of the reasons why I always hated (and still hate) school was that it seemed so much like an isolated place where the laws of decency don't apply, and where the average stupidity degree gets higher than in more "normal" places. Teachers are also a powerless target, too.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

Cue a thousand hilariously witty one-liners along this template.

I think its stupid, I hate nearly all forms of Political Correctness and this is just silly. They're just hitting the other extreme -- now they're not talking about heterosexuality enough, thus neglecting them. Husband and wife are age-old traditions and they should still be allowed to be said in schools. 'Partner' to me implies someone who had no legal bond of wedlock with you or anything. 'Wife' signifies someones you're married to. If I was gay I'd call my married opposite my husband. But that's immaterial. This is stupid, tentative and cowardly. If someone complains, point out they're one in 6 billion who is.

@Voltaire-- I'm confused. How was your experience so different than mine? Your post was pretty rage-y at the Man, but I'm lost.

@ Nick--Great comment thanks. You're a credit to the Flemish.

    @ Boof--

One of my gay friends married a guy, and now that's his husband. The terms "husband" and "wife" do not necessarily belong to a heterosexual couple.

If I was in that school, I wouldn't give a damn how many of those words they censor, I'd keep saying that a girl is my girlfriend, and if they don't like it screw them.

This is definitely ridiculous, Homosexuals shouldn't be treated any better, or worse, than heterosexuals. I wonder if a homosexual made fun of someone for being straight whether it would be any big deal.

No, it wouldn't. It's not a fair thing. Just like racism. It's ok to hate the white man, but as soon as it gets turned the other way, well, that's not allowed.

Homophobia literally means "fear of gay people"

if gay people continue to push their politically correct agenda on us, then the term homophobia is rather apt. We should all be homophobic.

P.S. I thought this thread was going to be about SkyNet
