Default brigands revolt - how does it function?

In descr_rebel_factions (at the bottom of the file) there is the brigands revolt(technically they`re called brigands instead of peasant_revolt). These are the rebels that appear in the provinces and not in settlements when they revolt. Now, my question is:

How does the engine chooses which of those units appear in which region?

There has to be a rule, but I`m not sure which it is.

Wild shot in the dark, but perhaps it has to do with the culture tag of a region? Region--> default region culture --> Culture --> factions belonging to the culture ---> unit availability in EDU for these factions ?

So, in a region where the default faction is eastern, units that are available to eastern factions will appear...

That's a good question, I hope someone has researched this properly and has an answer.

Well, the problem with that solution is that in vanilla RTW and vanilla Bi only merc units are used for the brigands revolt. And those only have slave for ownership in EDU and will use the merc texture/sprites in DMB. So I don`t see how it can connect with the unit via the culture.
As you can see, in vanilla, there is a wide range of units in that revolt so there must be some way to chose which goes where. I haven`t played vanilla in ages, but I don`t remember sarmatians appearing in Africa and so on.

One theory(anallein came up with it) is that maybe it uses descr_mercenaries in corelation with descr_rebel_factions to determine in which regions it will create them. This makes some sense since in vanilla only merc units are used. But, in Bi for example there are units(like merc sarmatian auxilia) that are not mentioned in descr_mercenaries. And i remember some libyan spearmen brigands appearing in RTRPE without being mentioned in descr_rebel_factions for brigands. Which begs the question: is the brigands revolt alone used for the brigands?

The reason I`m a bit worried about this is because I have removed some of the vanilla entries that were on the brigands list too and I hope there won`t be any issues later on(no problem imediately apparent though). Originally I thought that you can put any unit there and just as well remove it, but what if there has to be a unit for each region(depending on how the game selects them)?

Bottom line, it`s something I`ve asked around in the past too, but never got a clear answer so I hope doing it publicly might help. Thanks for your reply!

Right, I forgot about that, haven't played vanilla in ages. Anyway, I think that you are safe, as we (FATW) only have 1 unit for brigands that is available only to rebels and 1 normal faction and we've encountered no such problem...

An odd thing happened in my game. I was testing something and I let Pergamum revolt. To my surprise I noticed there was an illyrian mercenary unit in the revolt. I checked in descr_regions and noticed they have the Ionians revolt. So I went to correct this since imo illyrian mercenaries shouldn`t be part of a revolt for this area. The thing is that the unit was not mentioned for Ionians. Which was a bit unexpected. But then I remembered about the brigands and I checked there. Yes, it was part of the brigands revolt. So the "no regions based" tag that ca put at the beginning of the brigands revolt is a flexible rule. Question is how did it end in there? I checked the descr_mercenaries and the pool that has Mysia/Pergamum does not have illyrian mercenaries. But the unit had macedon among other factions for ownership in EDU(presumably to appear for them in custom) and the region Mysia had macedon as culture tag in descr_regions. I wonder if this is the connection.

I was wondering how you can add trained units to slaves rebels, so that they have harder armys to fight ?

You mean units with experience or just better units?
