    Default Your country's national anthem

Inno di Mameli (Mameli's Hymn) - Italian national anthem

here's the lyrics in italian and english
    Italian lyrics

    Fratelli d'Italia,
    l'Italia s'è desta,
    dell'elmo di Scipio
    s'è cinta la testa.
    Dov'è la Vittoria?
    Le porga la chioma,
    che schiava di Roma
    Iddio la creò.

    CORO/Chorus:
    Stringiamoci a coorte,
    siam pronti alla morte.
    Siam pronti alla morte,
    l'Italia chiamò.
    Stringiamoci a coorte,
    siam pronti alla morte.
    Siam pronti alla morte,
    l'Italia chiamò SI!

    English Version

    Brothers of Italy,
    Italy has awoken,
    with Scipio's helmet
    binding her head.
    Where is Victory?
    Let her bow down,
    For God has made her
    Rome's slave.

    CHORUS:
    Let us join in cohort,
    We are ready to die!
    We are ready to die!
    Italy has called!
    Let us join in cohort,
    We are ready to die!
    We are ready to die!
    Italy has called YES!

    Wilhelmus van Nassau
    Ben ik van Duitsen bloed
    Mijn vaderland getrouwen
Blijf ik tot in den dood

    De prins van Oranje
    Blijf ik vrij onvereerd

    De koning van Hispanje
    Heb ik altijd geëerd

And another 14 stanza's, which no one knows.

The Dutch national anthem is the oldest national anthem in the world. It was not the first national anthem (which is 'God save the King/Queen'), but it has the oldest lyrics of any national anthem. The words date back to 1568, whereas the melody may be even older..

Here are a few orchestral versions:

(This is the version usually played on Memorial Day)

(This one takes a few more liberties with the melody unfortunately)

As for the translations, there are two versions; a literal translation and a translation that fits the music:

    Literal
    William of Nassau am I
    of Dutch blood.
    loyal to the fatherland,
I will remain until I die.
    A prince of Orange,
    I am, free and fearless.
    The king of Spain
    I have always honoured.

    Lyrical
    William of Nassau, scion
    Of an old Germanic line,
    I dedicate undying
Faith to this land of mine.
    A prince Of Orange,
    I am, undaunted ever free,
To the king of Spain I've granted
    A lifelong loyalty.

The lyrics are sung from the perspective of William of Orange, considered to be the founding father of the Netherlands. He was one of the leaders of the rebellion against Philip II, the King of Spain (and in charge of the Netherlands at the time). The entire song is meant to be a justification of the rebellion and William's actions..

It is sometimes criticized as being unsingable, because some people find the lyrics difficult to remember, because they don't feel connected to the topic in the first verse (singing about 'German blood' (which is how the old word sounds nowadays, while it actually means 'Dutch') and the 'King of Spain'). There have been plenty of calls to change it, but fortunately wiser heads have prevailed..

I think 'Het Wilhelmus' is one of the most beautiful anthems in the world and isn't as martial or violent as some of the other anthems out there.. But hey, I might be biased..

The way it sounds when being sung by a bunch of Dutch football supporters right before the match between the Netherlands and Serbia-Montegro..

Oh, as for the Italian national anthem; I love it.. It's just so cheerful! Plus, I hear it after almost every Formula One race..

According to the Theory of War, which teaches that the best way to avoid the inconvenience of war is to pursue it away from your own country, it is more sensible for us to fight our notorious enemy in his own realm, with the joint power of our allies, than it is to wait for him at our own doors.

    The civli anthem of Denmark.

    Original version
    Der er et yndigt land,
    det står med brede bøge
    nær salten østerstrand :|
Det bugter sig i bakke, dal,
    det hedder gamle Danmark
og det er Frejas sal :|

    Der sad i fordums tid
    de harniskklædte kæmper,
    udhvilede fra strid :|
Så drog de frem til fjenders mén,
    nu hvile deres bene
    bag højens bautasten :|

    Det land endnu er skønt,
    thi blå sig søen bælter,
og løvet står så grønt :|
    Og ædle kvinder, skønne mø'r
    og mænd og raske svende
    bebo de danskes øer :|

    Hil drot og fædreland!
    Hil hver en danneborger,
som virker, hvad han kan! :|
    Vort gamle Danmark skal bestå,
    så længe bøgen spejler
sin top i bølgen blå :|

    English literal translation

    There is a lovely country
    it stands with broad beeches
    by salty eastern beach
It winds itself in hill, valley,
    it is old Denmark
and it is the hall of Freyja

There sat in days of old,
    the armour-clad warriors,
    rested from strife
Then they went forth to the injury of enemies,
    now their bones are resting
    behind the mound's menhir

    That country is still lovely,
because the sea waves so blue frolic,
and the foliage stands so green
    And noble women, beautiful maidens,
    and men and brisk swains
    inhabit the Danes' islands

    Hail king and native country!
    Hail every a Dane-citizen,
    who works, what he can
    Our old Denmark shall endure,
    as long the beech reflects
its top in the blue wave

    Royal anthem:

    Original version

Kong Christian stod ved højen mast
    i røg og damp;
    hans værge hamrede så fast,
at gotens hjelm og hjerne brast.
Da sank hvert fjendtligt spejl og mast
    i røg og damp.
Fly, skreg de, fly, hvad flygte kan!
    hvo står for Danmarks Christian
    hvo står for Danmarks Christian
    i kamp?

    i strid?

O, Nordhav! Glimt af Wessel brød
    din mørke sky.
    Da ty'de kæmper til dit skød;
thi med ham lynte skræk og død.
Fra vallen hørtes vrål, som brød
    den tykke sky.
    Fra Danmark lyner Tordenskjold;
hver give sig i himlens vold
hver give sig i himlens vold
    og fly!

Du danskes vej til ros og magt,
    sortladne hav!
    Modtag din ven, som uforsagt
    tør møde faren med foragt
så stolt som du mod stormens magt,
    sortladne hav!
Og rask igennem larm og spil
og kamp og sejer før mig til
og kamp og sejer før mig til
    min grav!

    English version

King Christian stood by the lofty mast
    In mist and smoke;
His sword was hammering so fast,
    Through Gothic helm and brain it passed;
Then sank each hostile hulk and mast,
    In mist and smoke.
"Fly!" shouted they, "fly, he who can!
    Who braves of Denmark's Christian,
    Who braves of Denmark's Christian,
    In battle?"

Nils Juel gave heed to the tempest's roar,
    Now is the hour!
He hoisted his blood-red flag once more,
And smote upon the foe full sore,
And shouted loud, through the tempest's roar,
    "Now is the hour!"
"Fly!" shouted they, "for shelter fly!
Of Denmark's Juel who can defy,
Of Denmark's Juel who can defy,
    The power?"

North Sea! a glimpse of Wessel rent
    Thy murky sky!
    Then champions to thine arms were sent;
    Terror and Death glared where he went;
From the waves was heard a wail, that rent
    Thy murky sky!
    From Denmark thunders Tordenskiol',
Let each to Heaven commend his soul,
Let each to Heaven commend his soul,
    And fly!

Path of the Dane to fame and might!
    Dark-rolling wave!
Receive thy friend, who, scorning flight,
Goes to meet danger with despite,
Proudly as thou the tempest's might,
    Dark-rolling wave!
    And amid pleasures and alarms,
And war and victory, be thine arms,
And war and victory, be thine arms,
    My grave!

Swedish national anthem; Du gamla, Du fria (Thou old(st), Thou free)

    English:

1You ancient, you free, you mountainous North
    You quiet, you joyful beauty!
I greet you, most beautiful land upon earth,
/:Your sun, Your sky, Your meadows green.:/

2You throne upon memories of great olden days,
When honoured your name flew over the world,
I know that you are and will be as you were,
/: Yes, I want to live I want to die in the North :/

3I forever will serve my beloved country,
your faith until death will I swear,
Your right will I protect with mind and with hand,
/:your banner, great the feats it carries.:/

4With God shall I struggle (fight),
    for home and for hearth,
    for Sweden, the dear motherland.
I trade You not, for anything in the world
/: No, for I want to live I want to die in the North.:/

The United States: The Star Spangled Banner

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

The first verse is the only part that is usually sung.

Because the song was written by Francis Scott Key, while being held aboard a british ship that was bombarding Fort McHenry.

and your anthem, while beautiful, is the most militaristic anthem I've ever heard. Frankly, it scares yanks like me.

Here's our national anthem of Finland, Maamme laulu (=Song of Our Land). Lyrics (both in Finnish and English) are in the second video. The third vid includes also partly Swedish lyrics, as all the lyrics were first written so because the writer Johan Ludvig Runeberg was Swedish-speaking Finn, and as there're many Swedish-speakin Finns living in Finland. I sincerely think that ours is one of the greatest national anthems, not only because it's ours , but it's at the same time really epic and beautiful with nice lyrics - as national anthems should. I also like much national anthems of Russia and of France.

    Maamme - instrumental:

Whereas I consider myself a Kentuckian first and an American second, I feel the State Anthem of the Commonwealth of Kentucky is far more appropriate than the American anthem.

My Old Kentucky Home, by Stephen Collins Foster. The American Mozart, I call him. Written in 1853, it was established as the Kentuckian anthem in 1928. In 1986, the lyrics were revised to a more universal tone.

    Official Lyrics:
The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home,
    Tis summer, and people are gay;
The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom
While the birds make music all the day.

The young folks roll on the little cabin floor
    All merry, all happy and bright;
By'n by hard times comes a knocking at the door
Then my old Kentucky home, Good-night!

Weep no more my lady. Oh! Weep no more today!
We will sing one song for my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home, far away.
