    Default Un-naming the legions

I understand that the named Roman legions are one of the major features of this mod, and they're great. However, as you undoubtedly know, the AI doesn't follow the army composition "rules," and mixes up units from the various named legions. This doesn't affect gameplay and generally is not a big deal, but it bothers me nonetheless.

So my question is this: How would I go about "un-naming" the Roman legions when I decide to play as a different faction? Which files would I have to edit? Keeping in mind I want to keep the Roman AOR system, just take out the names.

that'll take you a long time bro, it'll be a case of scrolling through all the named legions in the desc_unit folder think thats the one (the one with all the stats and each unit) and making them unplayable by rome except the one you would like the ai to use, and then going into the desc_building file, and scrolling through the army barracks - imperial barracks and changing the one legions you want the ai to be able to use to non region specific , so just erasing the text that comes after which faction uses that unit.
hope that kind of helps bud but the first bit will take a lot of work scrolling through all of those units gd luck !

Hmm, if that's all then it shouldn't take terribly long. I'm not on my PC with RTW installed at the moment, or else I'd take a look at those files.

When I'm done I can upload the alternate files if there are others who are also annoyed by the Roman AI's 'disorganization.' Or even for disorganized players who might like a slightly more casual Roman campaign.

Braddock8, there are several ways you can do this, but it depends on exactly what you want to achieve. Are you unhappy with stacks composed of several differently named cohorts, or different looking cohorts? One requires a bit more work than the other.

If it is the names that bothers you, then by far the easiest way to change this is to open data\text\export_units.txt and change the text after the fisrt set of brackets for each cohort to ‘Legionary Cohort’ or ‘Imperial Cohort’ or whatever.

If it’s is the looks that bother you, then choose which legion you think looks most ‘standard’ and in data\export_desc_unit.txt, change the ‘soldier’ type to whichever legion you have chosen to ‘standaridise’ to. All legions will look the same, but of course all the UIs will not. To complete this change, you would have to go into data/UI and change all the cohorts to the UI for the standard legion you have chosen. Thus, the AOR will remain, but all the legions will look the same.

Obviously you can do this for each ‘period’ of legionary, standardising on one type for each period – Republic, Consular, Imperial

Honestly it is just the names that bother me, since they're an organization tool in the hands of a disorganized AI. I actually like the different looks because I can still (usually) tell where the Roman AI is getting their troops.

    No, :sparta:
There, now I've got that out of the way...

Is there any particular reason you want to do this, it doesn't really affect anything game-wise, so why not leave it?

Just a little pet-peeve of mine when I'm fighting against Romans, is all. Certainly nothing gamebreaking.

Well, if the AI isn't going to utilize them properly, why not? The names are meaningless unless you're playing as Rome.

I`m not sure how rs implemented it, but here`s the basics of implementing named legions in rtw:
