Are the recommended system requirements on the box accurate? As in, if I follow those guidelines I'll be able to play mostly high settings with large armies, lag-free? If not, what are the real recommended system requirments?

Probably not high, maybe high-medium. It also depends on the amount of soldiers you have on the battlefield.
