    Default Oldest family member?

Just naturally curious about this one.

When I used to play vanilla Rome, I recall fighting against an Egyptian general that was, I kid you not, either 96 or 97 years old I was like WTF!

But apart from that the oldest family member I have encountered was one of my own in my recent campaign who lived to the grand age of 77 (which is still pretty old considering that most do actually die before reaching any where near that age) and he had all the good health stats too so that may be why lol..but yeah.

I had a Julii faction leader, Lucius Julius, that lived up till 80+ years of age. He was a great administrator, he administrated at Arretium pretty much from the start of the game. Not sure if there's a correlation between staying in cities and living longer, but none of my other family members have ever lived past 70.

My faction leader Hanno (Carthage faction) died when he was about 83-85, but he died in battle

The oldest FM I have ever had reached 83 iirc, but I have never seen anyone else live after 66 or 67 at most.

I've found that family members from the Roman or Hellenic factions seem to have longer lives. When playing those factions family members I've had have fairly often lived into their 70's, whereas whilst playing the barbarian factions their members seemed to die in their 50's and 60's. Due to this whilst playing the barbarian factions its a good idea to transfer the retainers to younger members fairly quickly.

Something vaguely connected to this, does anyone know what "Died tragically" means on one's family tree? I've got died peacefully, died in battle, and died on plague, but tragically? Is that when they are killed by uprising or assassin?

@fourganger: I thought it was because of the plague to be honest.

My oldest family ever was Publius. A great commander in my Rome campaign. He has been called Publius the Philosopher, the Killer, the Orator, the Conqueror, the Mighty, the Victor, the Cunning and he died at the age of 107 years old in the summer of 204 BC simply as Publius the Great.

His reputation was remarkable, for example he had +19 influence, +7 morale on battlefield and many, many other great traits. He even kept a +3 hitpoints, +8 sight and +2 and +20% to movement points traits till he died, even at that age he was still able to physically outperform any younger general I had. May he rest in peace.

    What is a noctophiliac?

A tragic death is definately not becasue of plague. I originally thought plague when I saw it on my family tree, but there seems to be a seperate entry for dying due to plague.

Maybe "tragically" was for the ones who get assassinated? :hmmm:

noctophiliac maybe means "night fighter", but i'm not sure :hmmm:

I think a death is referred to as a tragic death when, say, a civil revolt kills the guy. Don't quote me on that, though, I've only seen it once.

A noctophiliac gives a +2/+3 command to fighting night battles, I think. Awesome skill-- transforms a five-star ('good') general to an eight-star ('great') general.

Inspiration: OMG! 106 years old? That's just....... mind-boggling.

Yeah he was 107 years old actually. He died a year after that screenshot, I actually made a screenshot each year because I knew this might be a record. I used that general _a lot_, I needed his night fighting skills to be able to fight 4 different full stacks of macedonians each turn individually. Every trait he had was maxed out when he was about 100, so he couldnt get any better and his bodyguard was maxed out in experience also.

He had +6 command by default. He also had:
    +1 when attacking
    +3 when defending
+4 when fighting at night (noctophiliac + night fighter)
    +1 when attacking walls
    +1 when commanding infantry

Because of his great morale boost to my legions I was able to fight of stacks of 4000-5000 hoplites (excluding skirmishers here) with just 16 units legionaires that were already weared down because of many battles each turn. You could say I mourned the death of Publius the Great.

In answer to the 'Died tragically' questions..

I personally have only ever had that message when one of my generals has died in a naval battle whence my family member has been aboard a vessel....

Isn't it because of natural disasters? I just had a eureka moment that I saw "died tragically" after some vulcano erupted and killed a general.

Now we can get back ontopic, anybody has proof of a general older than mine?

Like I told you mine lived to 114

Why would I lie about something so trivial plus i never used cheats :O

He was renamed Tiberius Augustus (He was Brutus originally since i was playing Bruti campaign)

Some guy on gamefaqs said he had a general who lived to 124, i think
I was like damn thats one old

LOL, no one said you lied....

But yeah! I had a Tiberius Augustus too! About the only time I got Augustus, I think. Is it just me, or are the Brutii especially prone to getting the 'Virtus' trait? In one of my Scipii games the AI Brutii had no less than two Augustus guys...... and they were stomping all over Greece.

I seem to recall the "tragic death" message coming up most often when a wife has died. I don't recall it being associated with a male family member.

Check your family tree- there's probably at least one tragic male death in there.

    114!?!??!?

    Unbelievable!...not saying you're being untruthful just..wow.

I didn't think reaching such an age was possible!

Obviously he was a great general who pwned anything that dared venture close enough, but I can't imagine he himself, in his final years, looking so threatening to the enemy lol
