    Default Alliances, protectorates? Diplomacy...?

I thought that alliances in shogun and ( in rome total war) protectorates meant virtually nothing. Computers break alliances frequently in both games, meaning that diplomacy is near-worthless... Perhaps a penalty system could be introduced? In particular a master should very rarely attack his vassal (as frequently occurs in rome total war). My example: I was playing seleucids in RTW and all of my three allies decared war on me near the start (about 10 turns in) when I had done nothing to agravate them....My army was pretty big too, having trained troops in almost every province in every year AI sucks!

Diplomacy was the main fault with the series: just because the game is called 'total war' dosent mean that you cant smash your enemies together. (permanent alliances were very uncommon in Medival TW2 as well frustratingly)
Can anything be done to alter the diplomacy?

Well the diplomacy in RTW WAS a big fault and they've paid for it by players posting angry posts and stuff. I f you look around for some mods they use Darth's diplomacy or something else that makes the diplomacy better, but browse around the forums.
    BTW Welcome to the forums.

I don't remember STW allies betraying so much as RTW=/
However I do remember allying to Hojo as the Uesugi every once in awhile because I didn't feel like taking Takeda and Hojo at the same time in the beginning. The biggest problem I thought in STW with alliances is that they should've done something that it gave you some way to walk through your allies 'land.

doh! uninstalled MTW2 and havent got disk with me

This is a bit like RTR for shogun methinks, in that your team tries to recapture realism. You produce great work

Maybe alliances and peace treaties should last x amount of turns before expiring....whereby they can be renewed immediately if agreed....If this agreement is broken new alliances will be nearly impossible to make and peace treaties are offered less....

Different lengths of time for peace could be negociated....Ieyasu won the title of shogun through carefully selected alliances, by proving his loyalty to allies, and through skillyfully fought battles. Diplomacy is very important with so many small clans methinks.

The current diplomacy system gives the AI no reason not to attack a trusted ally.

Another idea...Broken alliances result in your troops suffering an honour penalty for a set number of turns.

I'm not sure most those ideas can be implemented.

Also Ieyasu became shogun because he waited till most the work was done for him and any real competition was dead.

If only you could request people to fight with you. . Battles were won and lost thanks to allied armies.

Well still if I look at the Japanese map, armies will be close to eachother. Seems that leaves alot of oppurtunity for battles with more than 2 armies, choose the armies that are close to eachother (one being preferably your ally ) and there you go
