sometimes religious freedom has to be suspended to protect children.

I applaud the government's action here.

I fail to see how religious freedom comes into this. Its' a matter of child abuse. Are you suggesting that some alternative crime would be acceptable in the context of religious freedom?

[Controversial]Religious freedom would be an issue if we were talking about the right of a parent to indoctrinate a child into a particular religion versus that child's right to freedom of religion. Which rather subjective and of course it is widely assumed that it is the parents right to do so. Religion is only brainwashing in the popular view when it is propogating views that don't sit with socio-cultural norms.[/Controversial]

well, they think it's their religious freedom to marry children.

    LOL. that's what they believe.

but we have to take away that right sometimes to protect children.

anything wrong with what I said?

Yeek. That church is ugly, nevermind.

And I applaud the government's intervention too. These people have chosen a religion to follow themselves but have decided selfishly to bring their children up into this way of life.

These kinds of communities, when they decide to have children and really start populating further these communities, have just broken a pretty basic law of humanity we cherish here in the West. The right to choose a different life and denounce other peoples' ways of life as "completely bat-shite".

Letting these kinds of communities to flourish is like having pockets of the Taliban in your own country. It looks bad at best.

Their "freedoms" weren't really freedoms at all because freedom doesn't mean the freedom to infringe on another's freedoms.

That would be too much freedom, breaking the oldest human law in the book.

it's their right to believe those ,

but we have to suspend their rights.

the Canadian constitution summarized it best:

    1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.

They arent real mormons, they are a group that splitted off from it long ago but still use the name. By all the stuff out there about how they were run they were little more then cult like. Its a good thing Romney didnt win the gop nomination since Im sure the media would be trying to link the two.

Its not a church its a temple.

@NakedBarbarian do you honestly blame everyone for the actions of a few. Collective Punishment is that one of your mottos. Don't critize germans because of hitler, so dont bash mormons because of what happen in Texas, hundreds of miles from salt Lake.

Its gonna take you 3 days to get there? Man, thats one hellofa long flight.

Anyway, These guys have apparently become cannon fodder for anti-polygamists, despite the fact that polygamy had almost no impact on these guy's decisions to marry little girls. Many people (including the newspaper article I read this in) blamed polygamy for these guys molesting little girls.

I don't really care if teenage girls are forced into marriage. They can leave at any time. This is a waste of public resources.

the point was they couldnt leave. the women had no rights in the society other than being sex slaves and it was a virtual prison.
the girl(16) who began this investigation phoned police saying she had been daily raped and beaten by her husband who she was arranged to be married to since she was 13 , she had a child for him at 15
she had broken ribs and was almost strangled to death by him
pologomy is one thing but raping and beating children is another
also intresting was that the girls rescued from the ranch were phsically sick when they ate modern processed food so they must have been born on site i wonder how long this has been going on

    @ white wolf
i dont see what you are being sarcastic about no one said anything about it being a uniqe american institution or because they were american
do you not think this was an evil practice
