Why can't I produce any damn archers in Italy?

The Romans were no damned archery lovers, that's why... You will get access to some archers in some places after the reforms.

I forgot the cities. Somewhere on the west coast of Greece and somewhere in Gaul. And otehr places as well.

Yes, as century said, Salona is an excellet source of Archers early on. Damn good ones too.

But, according to the Roman unit guide (the PDF from the sticky) the Romans are actually supposed to have archers available in Italy.

You can recruit archers as mercenaries until you capture a town like Tarentum and then you can recruit them for your legions

After the reform archers are recruitable outside italy:
For example, cretum Sagittarum in greek areas, recruit the gallic archers in cisalpine gaul and venetia

I like the mercenary barb archers the best. They seem alot smaller in formation than either of the later recruitable archers, so they fit into nice little pockets on the battlefield. Once they get into the gold chevron level they are pretty devastating missile fire.

I found mercenary barb archers very useful when playing as the Getae - they are far better than the Getae basic archers and they are very plentiful.

Merc archers are always useful in the early game, until you can get regular troops. Help alot in thinning the enemy lines

In Syracuse you can train archer cohorts, that's not far of Rome.

If you are playing Rome then once you have Patavium in your hands, you can jump across the border into Illyria and there you will find barb archers to hire. Just dont hand around there too long unless you have a big army with you :-)
