    Default Club of Rome: The latest conspiracy theory?

    According to some, the Green movement is a foil for a global conspiracy to impose totalitarian rule. The first few times I heard this, I dismissed it as an obvious retrofit of the old anti-communist boilerplate. However, I am finding that many people seem to agree with this idea. It appears to be a commonly held view that the Greens want to bring about "a new age of monsters, with millions or billions dying as a result."

    I feel like I am taking crazy pills. Does anyone else here think this is bizarre nonsense? Or is it just me?

    No it's bizarre nonsense. I like the other side of the same coin where all the scientists who advocate global warming are doing it for money. How exactly it earns them money they refuse to say.

    I don't know about 'scientists', Ferrets, but government is standing to make big money on the carbon tax.
    'What carbon tax?' You say?
    British Granola, Canada was the first to introduce it.

    Environmental measures cost a government far more than they bring in, so there's that out the window. Carbon taxes are usually targetted at airliners or major manufactories as incentive.

    Its' nonsense.

    Captain Arrrgh!: Its' worth point out that carbon taxes arguably harm economic growth and that the economy is a key factor in electoral performance. Carbon taxes wouldn't be in the interests of the incumbent Government in this context.

    Not that I think carbon taxes are the ideal approach.

    Sorry Wilting, please clarify, are you saying they don't exist? BC just initiated them.
    @Ferrets, it will take a breakdown of the expenditure for said measures, in addition to what else is being included with the carbon tax, ie, extra fines and environmental measures from corporations, etc.

    I really can't imagine how it could ever turn a profit. Green energy is largely still in an experimental and uncommercial stage with the exception of wind power. Yet in Britain significant solar panel and tidal investment is being paid for. The first commerical sized tidal power station has been built, although it is not expected to turn a profit. Taxes on certain cars are set to rise. The congestion charge in London is legally obliged to pay all profits back into transport.

    Obviously I can only talk for Britain but there's simply no mathematical possibility of the government turning a profit.

    Remember what Christ said;

    "Compete with thy neighbor for thy daily bread, and when thou hast made a profit on it, crap on his face."

    Or what the apostle Paul remarked;

    "Strive to destroy everything around you, lest it lives. For as it is written, 'God hates ferns.'"

    ...Yes, I have been feeling a bit salty today, glad you asked, now get off my porch...

    High tax might put people off a party, but playing the green card can get votes. If they mainly put pressure on the big companies and airlines and average people don't care so much.

    Being green is certainly a vote winner. All major British political parties are now so environmentally minded the Green Party is essentially defunct. However, their electoral performance has in fact improved considerably and can now in fact politically maneuvour slightly via Parliamentary alliances.
