I finally decided to end my 5.4 campaign and start over with 5.5, but I wonder if there's a way to remove the recruitment limit/faction size thing. Didn't find anything around here, so I'm sorry if I just overlooked the solution.

I can help you as I have removed a limit, editing game and I spread files which delete a limit.
But you must have Isilendil submod 8 for use this.

Do your changes remove the field costs?
I just started a campaign, still getting those faction size and unit index messages, but instead I don't have field costs anymore (means, it's like vanilla TW, no costs at the end of a turn, playing with Scotland)
Yes I remove field costs, garrison script and faction limit. The message on a limit and the size of faction will come but they are switched-off.

I do not allow anymore any addons which remove core DLV stuff. Addons which add new stuff or change are still welcome.

I won't use this modification anyway, since the field costs' removal remove what DLV is about. The only thing i wasn't comfortable with are these build limits by principle. I don't like population cap in other games as well, but I think I have to try them this time ^^'
