    Default Torch Extinguished

According to AP the torch was extinguished in Paris today. It isn't on the internets yet.

    Here it is:

    http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/eu...lay/index.html

French torchbearers will be encircled by several hundred officers, some in riot police vehicles and on motorcycles, others on rollerblades and on foot. Chinese torch escorts will immediately surround the torchbearer, with Paris police on rollerblades moving around them. French firefighters in jogging shoes will encircle the officers on rollerblades while motorcycle police will form the outer layer of security

WTF, this is all very "Olympic"... :hmmm:

I agree, but the world doth not hear our protests.

Oh please. Politics has been involved ever since the debate over whether Alexander I was Greek or not. Black power symbols... the USSR and USA boycots... the fact of the matter is politics and the olympics are interlinked and always have been.

The concept of the Modern Olympics is fatally flawed.

There are (only) national teams, competitors wear national colours and are almost always identified first by nationality and only secondly by name. This is compounded by the use of national flags throughout the games and the playing of national anthems at the winning ceremonies. Even the medal tables are ranked by nationality.

How could anyone seriously suggest that all this should be free of politics without choking on their own laughter?

    Human rights are not politics.

(...) and that unfortunate People were afterwards forced to undergo the utmost Miseries of a Siege, in their Capital City of Barcelona; during which, great Multitudes of them perished by Famine and the Sword, many of them have since been executed; and great Numbers of the Nobility of Catalonia, who, for their Constancy and Bravery in Defence of their Liberties, and for their Services in Conjunction with Her Majesty and Her Allies, had, in all Honour, Justice, and Conscience, the highest Claim to Her Majesty's Protection, are now dispersed in Dungeons throughout the Spanish Dominions.

Why not do something that actually will influence China's policy?
Interfering with the Olympics is nothing.

Deal with the country's economy or something. Design boycotts and whatnot - anything that can catch on and actually have an effect. The \b\tards attacking the torch runners are about as useful as those guys who ran DOS attacks on the Scientology websites.

BAAD idea. Human rights issue ISN'T something that can be solved in the short term.

It MUST solved in the LONG term, and economy is one of the main ways to solve it.

Damaging their economy isn't going to help.

Officials twice extinguished the torch and put it on a bus for safety reasons.
well the protests continue in Paris after London, no surprise here.
Maybe China next time would learn that to improve his image in the world a big and costly pubblic relations effort like the olympics in not enough if you have riots in a country under your occupation.
A huge deal of olympic money wasted for nothing, it seems.

neither. criticism for Human rights is an application of political convenience.

when you guys have hundreds of billions of trade turnover with China, nobody gives a rats ass about their human rights record. and as soon as Olympic games come up, then of course omfg it is the end of the world.

Eventhough I don't like how the Chinese have oppressed Tibet I really think the lastest events and threats of boycotts are idiotic. If anything they'll only make the common chinese move closer to the regime. Sports should not equal Politics.

Activists often times cause more harm then good. Regardless of their intent or message, their methods end up making everyone involved, esp. them, looking like a bunch of morons.
