Muslim War Graves Defaced in France



Up to 148 Muslim graves in France's World War I cemetery have been desecrated in an incident that has drawn strong condemnation from the country's president.

A pig's head was hung from one of the several tombstones targeted by vandals who also wrote slogans insulting France's Muslim justice minister, officials said on Sunday.

Describing Saturday's incident, Jean-Pierre Valensi, the state prosecutor for Arras, said "the slogans directly target Islam and they gravely insult Rachida Dati, the justice minister", who is the daughter of North African immigrants.

The Notre Dame de Lorette cemetery, in the northern town of Arras, commemorates the victims of a series of long and bloody battles for control of northern France at the start of World War I.

Muslim quarter

Inaugurated in 1925, the cemetery houses the remains of some 40,000 soldiers, half of them in named graves.

The Muslim quarter includes 576 tombs, grouped together and turned towards Mecca.

Saturday's attack targeted this section of the cemetery.


Jean-Marie Bockel, the secretary of state for veteran's affairs, said the government will review security at Notre Dame de Lorette.

Around 100 French gendarmes were at the cemetery on Sunday to gather evidence.

Condemnations

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, expressed "profound outrage" at the "sordid" attack and vowed that those responsible would be punished.

Francois Fillon, the prime minister, also voiced "outrage" at the attack.

"This is horrific, and for the 90th anniversary of the end of the 1914-1918 war. This is worse than the last time, it is abominable," Jean-Paul Doue, one of 3,800 volunteer honorary guards at the cemetery, said.

David Bardiaux, the curator of the cemetery's museum, said: "It is inadmissible, unbelievable. The cemetery is not locked, so it doesn't take courage to come and do this."

Muslim community leaders were allowed to visit the scene on Sunday.

'Disaster'

"This is shameful to see. When there is no more respect, it is a disaster," Bahssine Saaidi, the regional head of the French Council for the Muslim Religion, said.

"We need to work together ... to stop this problem of racism."

Incidentally, the cemetery attack happened almost exactly a year after neo-Nazi vandals scrawled swastikas on 52 of Muslim graves at the same site.

Two youths aged 18 and 21 were sentenced to a year in jail over that incident.

A 16-year-old youth received a six-week jail sentence.

I think this is the most ridiculous and despicable way of displaying one's hate toward another. Why would you insult those who died defending your own country? By the way do Neo-Nazis really think that if Nazism prevailed all over Europe their lives would be better? :hmmm:

Not the first time these morons in France did this either, back in 2003 they did it to British/American graves and in 2004 to Jewish graves...the common theme seems to be those who fought in WW1/WW2 and defended French asses be it Brit, Jew, American or Muslim. Total morons, would think France would up the security on these sites given that it isnt as uncommon as it should be.

Well whether they wish Hitler won or not (which would be amusing that young people now a days would prefer being slaves to Germany then what they have now) the one thing is clear is they are grade A morons. There little stint in prison should be 24/7 of film, photos, books etc of all those who died in WW1/WW2 for France and maybe instill some sense into them to see people beyond ethnic, religion or nationality and maybe to be thankful that people who were never French were willing to put their lives on the line for the ultimate benefit/well being of France. Its completely ignorance and sickening here is to hoping since most of them appear to be young they will grow up and learn what a disgusting act they committed.

A) no indication of that at all in the story
B) why would jews deface muslim graves because neonazis defaces their graves? that simply makes no sense especially considering both have been victims to these morons in the past and those incidents were "neonazi" types
C) give the tension between jew and muslim making such suggestions without any bit of evidence to support it isnt exactly helpful
D) these incidents have happened more then once to a variety of grave sites and the source of them is fairly consistent, young, dumb "nationalist" not much reason to suspect this one is any different

I'm not suggesting the desecration of any grave is acceptable, either. It's all very weak-minded behaviour.

There obviously not educated Muslims if they do so, as there is a long lost tradition in Islam in the presence of someones grave or tomb its like there house to intrude or damage it is as if you damaged their home while they were in it, while you are in another's home (or country) you treat it and them with respect.

Shyam, I sincerely apologize if you took this wrong. However, the fact is that the Nazis ... in this case, the German government ... attempted to use the nationalistic and religious beliefs of Muslims in areas controlled by France and Britain. Consider the Grand Mufti as one example, during the war.
I haven't the slightest doubt that that leaders of the weak neo-Nazi movement in France might be interested in fostering some sort of alliance with French Muslims. But do their followers have the discipline or intelligence to realize that attacking Muslim graves is not the way?
