    Default Galatian Horde

The start of the GCS campaign, reflects the situation c. 270 BC just before the start of the Chremonidean War. The start of the Macedon and Thrace campaigns reflects the situation c. 280 BC when the Galatians invaded Macedon, Thrace and Greece as far south as Delphi.

Would you prefer it if the GCS campaign were also set up to reflect the situation just prior to the Galatian invasion? In this case, instead of having to fight Macedon at the start, a large Galatian horde would over-run Macedon, and the main challenge at the start of the campaign would be to defeat this horde.

It would be more interesting in my opinion to fight the Chremonidean war for the GCS. I always enjoyed destroying Macedon as the GCS.

I think a Galatian Invasion campaign would be interesting, but I do like the current one. Could it be an install option?

i think a macedonian army is a better challenge then a galatian horde

    Dime

When you say 'over run Macedon' do you mean just pass through rather than actually wipe out - i.e. the Galatians would ignore Macedon and Thrace and head down to Athens & Sparta?

BTW - I may be going gaga but I haven't seen an AI Macedon/GCS war in campaigns when I am playing another faction like - forever. Do they start as allied if you are not playing one of them?

Macedon would probably be destroyed (assuming that the player takes the opportunity to liberate the southern cities). Of course this would only happen if the player was the GCS.

In my own campaigns and tests Macedon and the GCS usually keep the peace for a while. Then Macedon takes control of Greece. Sometimes the GCS manage to get a start again in Asia Minor.

I thought they started as allies regardless? At least I played as Macedon a while back and I'm sure I started allied with the GCS. In my current Seleucid game (233bc) they are still allied.

In any event I do think the proposal is an interesting one - it could really shake up the area. However I must admit to not being a GCS player, and I can see that most GCSers who have replied seem to be against the idea.

Last time I tried GCS I found them too easy - which is a great shame as they should be the main focus of the mod. Perhaps I didn't give it long enough, but Macedon dozed to the north of me, so I had no worries about holding Athens and Sparta.

In Asia Minor the Indie Greeks and Eastern Kingdoms did nothing whilst I (Pergamon) built up enough to capture their Aegean cities. The Seleucids should be the big threat, but whilst they squared up to Pontus etc I had money coming in faster than I knew what to do with and I whacked them at Sardis in the first battle.

If you decide to blitz (which I don't like doing) there is an element of 'first big battle syndrome' giving the winner an upper hand they shouldn't lose - and this proved the case as I started to steamroller through Asia Minor.

I would love to try GCS again with Loyalty back on - they really should suffer heavily from loyalty issues (as GCS did historically) but in the meantime I voted for the Galatians to come calling early - they hammered me as Thrace and I would be interested to see how they do against Spartans.

Can't however, picture what the map would look like with Macedon dead within 10 turns....

Hippias, just out of interest, who do you normally play as and on what difficulty level?

I have noticed a lot of same issues you enountered as the GCS when playing as Macedon - once I've dealt with the GCS I almost always invariably give up playing as it seems that most of the challenge has gone (I seem to be drowning in cash too).

Anyways, back on topic I guess that the proposed Galatian invasion would be represented by Indie Gauls much as the Galatians are at present? Would this upset balance? I'm still playing 5.6.4 so I don't know if anything much has changed recently but people were suggesting not too long ago that the Indie Gauls seem to flatten the Gauls more often than not.

Eyebrows - I was born a M/H player and I will doubtless die as one. I like a bit of diplomacy to work, which doesn't happen too often on H/H so I hear, but don't want enemies to rout too early on the battlefield, hence Hard battles.

I like to play as Armenia or Thrace, when I feel like a struggle, or Saba when I fee like chilling. Much of my fun comes from sending out diplomats to see what everyone else is up to, and try and create mischief with spies and assassins.

If you can make them install options - brilliant.

Both Macedon and Thrace have it hard at the start.

Historically the Gallic hordes would have continued southward after beating on the Macedonians anyway.

Fix the problem, not the blame!

I think I favor the Galatian invasion...just to stir it up a bit. As the GCS I end up fighting Macedon every time anyways. Would be a nice change of pace IMO...

Mmm maybe an install option I remember my first campaign on this mod as GCS and fighting an intense war against Macedon, at which if not for the AI's poor path finding in cities I may have lost. So I wouldn't want Macedon eliminated, however it could add an interesting twist on things for a horde to arrive....

I do believe that Macedon and Greece begin as allies, but usually if I'm not playing one of those two factions they descend into war very quickly, with Macedon often winning.

Galatian invasian sounds cool.....and it definitely stirs things up....what about just placing a huge stack of Galatian warriors near Sparta at the beginning of a campaig.....you know, instead of a rebel (grayish flag) stack....this way you would have both the Galatians and Macedonia to fend off.??? just a thought....:hmmm:

I like the current situation where you can fight for the freedom of Greece against the Macedonians in the way the great orator Demosthenes preached, and with the Macedonian and Thracian campaigns you had to deal with the Celts.

But if we want to use Chazapīs idea the Galatian horde should be somewhere northwest from Thebes rather than near Sparta, because Delphi was the southernmost place where the Celts "visited" in Greece in 279 BCA. Maybe the Galatian horde should be somewhere in Thessaly. Hereīs a wild story about the Gallic invasion to Greece, but donīt believe every details: http://www.livius.org/di-dn/diadochi/diadochi_t12.html

On the hand there might be a danger that in this kind of solution the Galatian horde and Macedonians would weaken themselves too much if the human player leads the Greek City States. Or what would be the right kind of role to the Macedonians in this scenario? I like to think about Macedonia as the one of the Hellenistic great powers even though smaller than The Seleucids and the Ptolemies.

i just destroyed the last greek settlement, then a ll but one of the greek independents cities turned into GCS interestingly enough, 2 of them were unoccupied so i walked straight in, the others i ordered my friends thrace to go deal with and scythia.

as for the Macedon thing i hd to kill 3 full stacks of celts attacking my capital, one after the other, pretty much straight away, its fairly tricky engaging them in open battle with such small forces but i eventually killed them and took their settlement...after the heroic sacrifice of my fiction leader

    wht exactly would be different??
