Icon1 The toughest enemy of Rome

I'm playing with the Romans in RS and I wonder who are Rome's toughest enemies to beat in the campaign? (H/VH difficulty).

I conquered all of Sicily and the official thread says to sit on my ass for a while (25-40 years) before expanding too much, to give my enemies time to "steam up".

So before conquering the whole Mediterranean, I wanna know where to go and whom not to crush. I want my last enemy (or enemies) to be the toughest guys of all, who wouldn't run away like frightened rabbits, but STAND and FIGHT.

    For honour and glory!

It depends - each campaign is unique, but in general the Macedonians are pretty tough if they manage to take over all of Greece.
Also very difficult are Armenia and Parthia due to their HA armies. Gaul and Germania have some very good high level infantry units which can stand toe to toe with legionaries. If either the Ptolemies or the Seleucids manage to gain an upper hand in the east, then you'll be fighting a lot of stacks, but each unit isn't too difficult to kill, it just that there are so many of them

The Macedonians really. Leave Greece alone and expand into Gaul, Africa and Iberia. Good luck!

I would say Germania, Iberia and Parthia. Germans because of their vicious infantry, the Iberians because most of their units use pilums and Parthia due to HA. Hope this helps.

Keep your eye on the Gauls. If they are allowed to grow and expand while your busy elsewhere...your gonna be in for a surprise. In most of my campaigns they tend to build up quickly and have alot of stacks. These aren't full of crap troops either, the AI seems to relish getting the Gauls tweaked with armor/weapon upgrades and using the high end troops, and they are not shy about using alot of archers either. Rome, sadly, lacks these in the early game unless you recruit mercs in Illyria and Greece. More than once I have found an offensive in Macedon or Sicily or Carthage stopped in its tracks when I've been forced to defend northern Italy from Gaulish adventurism.

Yes, I'm in need of archers, so if you find any, won't you please send them to me via email.

Seriously, you can't produce archers as Romans during the whole campaign? This is MADNESS!

As to the Gallic problem. I try to pursue an interesting strategy against Gauls: I allied with the Germans and stuff them up with tons of money. At a certain point I will kindly ask them to f...k Gaul's mouth in the north, so I can gently push in my vigorous spears from behind, in the south.

    Mehehehe!

Okay, so first Carthage, then Iberia, then the Gauls. And after that the Greek trip.
Finally: Pontus, Seleucids, Ptolemy and Parthia. Victory awaits!

    Thanks for the tips, guys!

Well,in my campaign i just started a war against the germanians and found out that you need like 15-20 full stacks to beat them-their infantry is just so strong.Got to bring more archers and artillery

    1) :sparta:

    2) You can recruit them after the reforms, just not before them. So if you want sum either go to Illyria or to the Balkans where mercenary barbarian archers are available.
After the reforms you get archer auxilia.

You can just add them yourself, like I did. They are crap, but do the job combined with velites and heavy inf.

In my roman campaign, the ptolemaics are dominating the eastern part of the map. I believe this is because I play with alexander.exe. (and that I steam-rolled greece
    )

It all depends randomly on how your campaign goes. However, I'd have to say that horsearcher armies are extremely annoying, even when playing as a faction with access to horse archers.

MACEDON. PLAIN AND SIMPLE are the toughest in your area. But once you go towards gaul and the germanic areas. The toughest are the germans.

Well when you have an entire army retreating in front of you and launching constant arrows at you. Then yes it can get a little hard.

No, HA's were around before the Huns.

    EDIT: Wikipedia says the Assyrians.

The problem is, then the HA's could just charge your slingers and win.

    There is no escape!

...Or you could be like the Chinese and invent a crossbow that outranges the horse archers...
