Default religion figures don't add up

    Hi There,

I recently added 'Judaic' religion to the game and this made me focus more on the religion aspect of the game. in particular, I started noting the percentages on the settlement details scroll. What struck me was that, well, they don't add up. For example, in the town of Rennes, I saw the following statistic:

    Heretic 18%
    Catholic 64%

But this doesn't add up to 100%. And this is not unusual, as I found similar figures for other settlements. Is there an explanation? Have I somehow screwed up the game by adding a new religion?

Also, in the settlement details scroll, the pip for Catholics doesn't always show up. I mean, sometimes it does, but sometimes it doesn't. I wanted to ask: if a settlement is 100% Catholic (or whatever) does the pip no longer show? This might explain the missing Catholic pips in my game.

Finally, since modding religion and tweaking some other files (settlement mechanics, descr_strat, EDB), I get a plague of heretics and getting rid of them is tedious. I wanted to ask: what makes heretics spawn? Maybe I'm missing something obvious? Maybe I just need to build more chaurches? But this plague of heretics affects the whole map, not just my faction.

Any help or advice much appreciated and thanks in advance.

I have never added a new religion yet, but you may want to check you map_regions.txt and check the balance of the religions no? i'm think your religion system is not showing up in the menu bar and thus would count for your missing stats i've not modded a new religion whats files have you edited for this?

For decreasing the number of heretics, look at the campaign_db, especially:

    <heretic_creation_modifier float="0.4"/>

I think they are mostly spawned if you already have different religions in a settlement (or heresy of course which is also another religion but works a bit differently).

As for the pips not adding up: Are you sure the difference is so large? I can't say I really looked into it but I seem to recall that they were usually in the vicinity of 100% and put it down to rounding errors.

No thing is everything. Every thing is nothing.

    Hi alpaca,

Thanks for this. I think most of the time the religion stats are close enough, but alarm bells rang when I saw the Rennes stats quoted above. I double-checked at the time and those were the stats - a total of 82%, which is nowhere near 100%.

Meanwhile, I checked regions.txt to see if my new 'Judaic' relgion was showing up and it was - all my changes were recorded in the file and showing through.

And so I'm not sure what's going on. Maybe I've just opened a can of worms?

P.S. Where can I find campaign_db? EDIT: OK, I've found it now!

I believe no matter what the religion rate is nor which religion it should still show and the bars should be present.

    Hi J@mes,

Thanks for this. I'm a bit confused by this situation - I think I'll just monitor it for now and see how it goes. I'll update this thread if anything weird or interesting happens.

This is very odd. I have not messed around with that file for a very long time, but I can tell you that I am shocked because when I was working with it, the percentages had to add up to 100% or the game would crash. If this is no longer the case, I am flabbergasted.

You have assigned Judaic to their own pips in the descr_religions file, & those pips are available in the UI folder?

    Hi There,

Yeah, I got the Judaic religion pips referenced and working.

I tested the game yesterday for a couple of hours on different factions, looking at the religion stuff on settlement details. This time no pips were missing and the religion stats either added up to 100 per cent or were, at most, 4 per cent out (usually 2 per cent out).

This is an improvement on the situation I reported above, and falls in line with alpaca's comments. now I'm beginning to doubt myself about the wild variations mentioned before. At any rate, the game is at least playable, so I'll just monitor the situation and post any problems or useful observations.

Many thanks indeed for help and advice - all very much appreciated.

    - i added "tengri" to descr_religions_lookup
    - i added this religion in all provinces in descr_regions file like this

    Volga-Bulgar_Province
    Bulgar
    russia
    Great_Bulgaria
    58 177 75
    none
    5
    3
    religions { catholic 0 orthodox 10 islam 50 pagan 4 heretic 1 tengri 25 }

but for some reason this new religion dosent appear and when im adding it to some faction and then runs game, it crashes when try to open the diplomacy window

in other thread someone said that you need to edit text\religions.strings.bin

Try getting your religion figures to add up to 100% and see how that works.
