    Default No offence but...

If the church of the Holy Sepulchre was destroyed it would not strike a mortal blow against Christianity.

It was just a building built by a Christian Roman Emperor over the spot where Christ was crucified.

Edit: i'm only posting this since it says in the mod for the description of the building that if it were destroyed it would strike a mortal blow against the Christian faith.

I'm not quite sure how Christians would feel, but it's destructions at the hand of a mad Fatimid Caliph was one of the straws upon the camel's back of the Papacy, which led to the call of the Crusade.

Then that proves my point even more, it was destroyed and it did not deal a mortal blow to the Christian faith.

Lie or not it was a very convenient excuse for pope Urban II to get the rather pious nobility of Europe whipped up into a frenzy and sent off to the holy land to “help their Christian brothers” and also capture Jerusalem and thus cement the Vatican’s/His power. So while it was a very clever political move on his part you have to wonder if he knew the crusades would cause centuries of warfare and mistrust which still isn’t really resolved even today?

Well considering he's a pretty proud Roman I doubt he's anti-Christian. You can be a proud member of your faith and realize the sins people who followed it have committed in the past.

However, we can all keep our opinions of the Crusades henceforth to ourselves, or open up a Vestigia Vetustatis topic to discuss it. I do not mean to stifle discussion, but there is a lot of very sensitive issues that our mod covers in the history of this period and this part of the world, so we'd like to keep our forums clear of such volatile context.

Nobody has done anything wrong yet, nor will we let anything be done wrong.

Well, I think you're kind of splitting hairs tbh. The basic idea is that the building is important to christianity - in particular medieval christianity. And harming/destroying it would cause serious offense to christian europe.

Nine Crusades worth of offense, to be precise.

EDIT: Keep in mind the developers of BC themselves didn't actually write most of the building descriptions. Not that the writer ought to be blamed or anything, its just we don't necessarily give 101% approval to every piece of unit or buildings text.

I take it by mortal blow you mean that it will kill Christianity? Its just a bad use of English thats all. But as Ahgia and mirage41 the destruction of it did seriously offend the Christians and was one of the main reasons for the 1st Crusade in 1096

If the church of the Holy Sepulchre was destroyed I think it would be as if someone would sack Mecka and Medina. And destroy those holy sites. It would upset a lot of people and a lot of people would go to war even if thay are not very pious they would still go and fight.
Remember that Christianity at that time was much more pious and fanatical then today. And the pope would excommunicate anyone who would not join the crusades. The orthodox and the byzantium empror would send arme after arme and Novgorod and Kiev Rus and all of Europa would be att war.
