Actually, Franks, and that was a general term for Westerners, not the French. But the main bodies of government and the Kings of Jerusalem were french lords. There were also large bodies of Italians, and a portion of English and Germans, but the main nobility were French. So therefore, they picked the common ground.

Haha how funny, I put that article on Wikipedia. I encountered the term in an article about the Ottoman Turks when I was writing an essay on the Military Revolution and the failure of the Turks to follow the new developments.

Richard the lion heart spoke french. Even in his court in England he spoke french with all his barons and lords.

He did not speak English at all, and by all accounts hated running the country prefering his holdings in Normandy/France .
