    Default Can't finish long campaign

Does any one else have a problem finishing a long campaign due to being overhelmed? I have been playing Rome for a few months and I just can't seem to finish a long campaign. There are just too many cities to keep track of and I just get overhelmed and start a new one.

I played with Carthage and took over all of Western Africa, Iberia, all the western med islands and southern Italy from the brutii and then........it got to be to much so I started a Seleucid campaign.

In the Seleucid campaign I took over Egypt, Syria, Asia Minor from the Pontics, and I destroyed Armenia and Parthia. I took Byzantium and then....I started a Julii campaign.

I am currently playing the julii campaign and I have Iberia, destroyed the Gauls, took Britian and Ireland, and I'm holding off the Germans and dacians at the Danube, and I am getting that feeling again to start over.

It just becomes too much for me. 1 turn takes like 30 minutes and I just start to lose interest. I do manage every city, army, and agent myself so maybe that is why it takes so long. In these campaigns I have gotten a good foothold and eliminated my flanks for the most part, but even fighting a one front war takes forever with so many cities. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

when i began playing this i to was overwelmed but i finaly worked out how to beet it. if you got enough money build enough units to fill the city that looks like its going to revolt then when they start revolting pull your men out and wait the recapture it and slaughter the inhabitants i find that the best way to deal with em

Its not that I have a problem with the cities revolting, there are just too many cities, armies, agents to manage when my empire gets to about 25-30 cities. Each turn takes FOREVER and I lose interest.

Yep, the managing gets too much in the end.
I follow you mate. Thats why the campaigns are funniest in the beginning.

I usually have several campaigns on the go at once, and when I get bored of one I switch to another, then to another then I eventually get back to the one I started on and complete it.

I think this is what I need to do. Like I said earlier, I have Carthage, Seleucid, and Julii games saved right now. Maybe I will switch back and forth to mix things up. I don't want to auto-manage anything as I don't really want the computer to do everything for me. I like to run my empire from top-to-bottom.

I think I just get stuck at the transition from the early game to the late game. I enjoy mustering up whatever army I can find and taking on larger armies in the beginning. Once I get a foothold of like 25 cities, I don't know when to stop recruiting and make an offensive. The begining is the best with a 1/2 stack army, blitzing your enemy, and getting many heroic victories. It is also easier to build up your generals when you only have like 5 of them. Once I get 20-30, I start to lose track of them.

I'll just try and power through it to get to the late game.

Do you try to manage each city individually? What I mean is maybe you should pretend you have provinces.

An example would be what I do in Sicily(I play a mod so I have more cities on Sicily than you), I put a governor(w/Geometer) in Syracuse and let him go to the other 4 cities(Melite included) to build stuff until I can bring other governors in for the other cities.

That way when I get a msg. i.e. 'construction finished', etc I just go to my provincial capital send him to the city and que up another building...

This is basically how I governed Italy in the early game. A governor w/Geometer in Rome while the other family members sat in a fort in Latium(so there kids Come-of-Age in Rome) I used the Roman governor to initiate all the construction and recruitment(he also has a retinue that gives discount on unit training) in Italy. When I get more areas I just do the same thing.

Another trick(I never use though) is to make kingdoms. If/when you take a city move all the members of that family to that area, future husbands kids will come-of-age in that city and you keep a supply of family members in the area without having to transport them out.

Basically break your big area of management up into smaller more manageable portions.

You could use automanage if its really bad, but I like to micro manage my empire, so I don't have that problem. If the faction has a limited roster (like vanilla Iberia), then I lose interest sometimes.

What's there to manage, really? Use the settlements tab to keep track of all your settlements easily. You should never need to change the tax rates more than once per couple turns. Every turn, open up the settlements tab and check the settlements without a building icon next to them. As for armies, just use a few stacks. Takes at most twenty seconds to move every army, and you probably don't have too many of those, if you do, you're probably over-recruited. Really, it's the agents that take the most time, but even then it shouldn't matter much. By the time you have 30 provinces, your diplomats are mostly obsolete. You've chatted with each faction already. Assassins, take one, kill a guy, repeat. Spies, go in groups of 2 or 3 into cities with low public order and repeat.

Each turn takes, at most, ten minutes, maybe even five. Well, at least for me anyways.

I occasionally get the urge to do this, unless the campaign is really awesome. But to this date, I have only completed one campaign. It was an Armenian RTR campaign.

Do what I do, I play it very slowly (I always build up, in fact that's what I do when I was first playing this game....) I always meet a strong faction as i start to go into the late game....if you want to have fun then try not to fight the Romans until you can do an Barca moment. then you can fight the Romans and kill them all!

I play slow as well. Not only do I take my time and let the AI build up, but I take time to finish the campaign. Granted I have three kids, wife, job, etc so these obligations dictate how much time I have to play. I try to play a couple of turns every few days and then it doesn't matter if they take 30 minutes each.

I always read posts from players who complete the long campaign by 220BC or in a weekend. I don't see the point in rushing so much. I like to sit back, think about my moves, manage my characters and enjoy. But to each his own.

played to 220BC? I went further than that I once finished a campaign and the date was something like 190BC. that's how slow i get.

im on day three of playing rtr and i have around 36-38 regions including rome and not many money problems. u have to manage ur cities to keep income/statuse up so u could depend on auto manage or just play multible campaigns. hard to suggest anything that changes the main dynamics of the game. maybe a mod?
