    Default Garrison value

This is about a town's/city's happiness/unrest. Not defensive value.

Are the garrison values of units straightforward? In other words, are 80 raw peltaists worth the same against Unrest as 80 elite Spartans?

And if they do have different value, is there a formula?

as far as i know, they have the exact same effect on unrest in your settlements .... best to keep cheap units for garrisons ....

I have always been under the impression that the only thing that matters with regard to unrest is the number of troops you have. Therefore you should garrison your towns with the cheapest and largest units. This is why in the original game I always used to use peasants.
In RTR, though, you need to use the cheapest, and largest, units for each faction, especially if the town is far away from any borders and unlikely to be attacked. However it may be worthwhile to keep a few units of "quality troops" in order to deal with any rebel armies which pop up from time to time.
Also remember that a garrison will only count up to 80% towards a populations happiness level. Thus once this level is reached there is no point buying any more troops to garrison the settlement, as it will have no impact on unrest.

Sure sounds like it. My favorite (as Carthage) was those desert javelins. 120 men, cheap to buy and something like 96 upkeep.

    Thanks.

As I just posted in another thread, only numbers matter, not troop quality, when it comes to garrison values.

only number matters unless a unit has the is_peasant attribute in the edu, which halves the garrison value

Only number matter but I would still recommend garrisoning with a melee type unit because if another faction decides to randomly attack an undefended town you have at least a tiny bit of defense. I only say this because I just defended a city (with regular stone wall) with 80 Italian Swordsmen from an army of 1200 Carthaginians for a year before I got a big army together and crushed them. (First I killed their elephants to keep them from getting through, then the towers shot their battering ram out the next time they tried, then the final time they used a siege tower but for some reason retreated because so many where killed by my defense towers waiting in line to get on the siege tower)

By the way, the garrison bonus you get is approximately 350 times your unit size factor times the amount of soldiers divided by the town's citizens minus 3.5

Unit size factor would be 8 for small, 4 for normal, 2 for large, and 1 for huge.
