Default The Late Game ist just crazy

    I play RS 1.5a.

In my last roman campaign, I just took my time.
And then carthage had so many armys on sicily that it took forever to take,
so all in all it took a long time for me to expand.
I think it was around 580 Ab Urbe Condita, when I got to war with the germans.
It was just impossible to fight all those full stacks myself, because it takes forever.
And calcing it all is hard because the late german infantry is really good, theyjust kill legionaries like nothing. Same with Sarmatis, they are unbeatable.
I glanced over to egypt and they had all of the east for themselves. And there were like 20 full stacks standing around a few places, not beeing needed.
I have no idea how i ever should attack those.

In RS, the later game is just unplayable, I guess I just have to start a lot of short campaigns.

If you are having problems with large numbers of stacks, maybe try the 1 turn game? Should be much more toned down in terms of mass stacks roaming all over the place

Germans are easy-peasy to kill if you have the right troops. Gauls are more difficult imo.

Use choke points and heavy infantry (Which you should already be doing).

You can easily go against lots with night-fighter general. Then reinforcements won't come into battle. You just need to have sufficient support for replacements of fallen ones.

EDIT: But it will take hell lot of time, though...

The only thing I can recommend if you don't like fighting lots of stacks is to play 1-turn.

Can we switch between 0 and 1-turn recruitment DURING campaign? Or does it only affect newly started ones?

You can switch during a campaign, just make sure there are no units in the recruitment queues when you do it.

    DVK's instructions:

    1. In the data folder you will find a folder named '_important_stuff'. It's named that because there's important stuff in it.

    2. In that folder is one called 'Recruitment'. In THAT folder you will see two folders:

    0_turn and 1_turn

    3. Copy the two files in either one into your 'data' folder (overwriting the two that are there when asked), and you will be playing 1 or 0 turn.

You can switch back and forth, but it is best to do this when you are NOT recruiting anything or building anything in your campaign.

    Hope this helps

Basically, I look at the late game as more of a strategy game than the tactical game the early game is. You can punish yourself by playing all these battles, or maneuver your men into the best places for strategic combat. It really makes you appreciate hastatii, I'll say that much. They autobattle ridiculously well versus everyone.

Rely on mostly heavy cavaldy to fight the Germans and the Gauls, your legions are... subpar compared to their superior infantry. Roman cavalry is by FAR the best in the game. I use between 6-8 units of heavy cavalry, and my infantry frequently doesn't even get into HtH range. 4 units of heavy cavalry charging any unit will decimate them at worst, and annihilate them completely a lot of the time.

playing with that many calvary units is no challenge.... i use to also use the very best units and just decimate any army easily but after playing this way for a long time you get bored pretty quickly. using historically accurate roman armies is much more fun.

Yes, but not versus endless waves of enemies that are vastly superior to you. If you're GOING to play that many battles, you might as well make it easy on yourself, or give yourself a fighting chance. I could play with 20 heavy cavalry and never lose, but 4 seems fine to me... my typical army is

    4 velite
    4 hastatii
    4 triarii
    4 equities
    4 principe

If I'm auto battling, it's 8 hastatii, 8 triarii, and 4 equitites. Velites are useless in autobattle, and principe and hastatii perform similiarly.

Against waves of massively superior german swordsman, your auxilia will crumble instantly. I use them to pin the units, and have my cavalry demolish them. At least they're not companion cavalry

mine is 4 velities, 5 principe, 4 hasatii, 4 triarii, 2 medium calvary, and my general. i guess when you are fighting that many it would be alright to have a lot of elite units.

In every modificatio of RTW, the late game features lots of stacks. I remember RTRPE with those repetitive stacks of seleucids, all the same and one coming after the other.
But RS is one of the mods that most have this. Money flows very easy in RS, especially in late turns. I rarely reaches the negative money count, and the same probably happens with the AI. Every turn I recruit five or more units in the cities, this in very hard difficult (for the campaign). I play one turn recruitment and the gauls are becoming a headache, throwing lots of stacks of gallic swordsmen, a unit that is easily beatable. I just use the autowin console command, because its more than 5 battles per turn, not counting the several ctds that I got every time I play, most of these ctds in the desert areas in the east. I reached the count of 1000 battles already in one campaign, and I dont remember of this happening in any other mod. This with all the economic penalties added in 1.5a. So yes the late game is crazy. I recommend that you use your spies to check the enemy stacks, and if theres nothing different, use the auto_win command.

I find that my legions have 4 cavalry units, but I hardly ever use them after the Marian reforms since the infantry is so strong.

I'm facing the same fate, and that scares me. I think the way to avoid that is to flood current enemy with multiple stacks, quick and hard, with very desirable sabotage expeditions on enemy's back taking settlements and destroying their infrastructure. My tactics from other mods of random filed battles to weaken enemy doesn't get me anywhere in RS... and apparently it never will.
Some relief is that it takes around 4000 from town's/city's population to create full stack, so even AI can't regain strength fast enough. And playing careful I can inflict drastically higher losses on opponent than he can on me.
