Default The Journeys of Ibn Battuta

This is an old feature article made up of 3 parts about the travels of Ibn Battuta, the great Muslim Berber traveller who explored all ends of the medieval Muslim world and its frontiers.

His life and journeys pretty much span the central historical themes of the Broken Crescent game-world hence it can give you a great idea of what was happening on the ground in many parts of our map.

It's a very fascinating read and I recommend you check it out!

hmm. I had to read a book on this for school once. I made about 15 pages before I slashed it up, burned it, and shot myself in the foot (maybe slightly exaggerated the third one). But this might be a more interesting telling, as the book I had was written in a way that makes a textbook seem juicy and exciting.

You can get a very good (and readable) edited translation (into English) from Amazon - edited by Tim Mackintosh-Smith (Picador, ISBN-10: 0330418793). I'd recommend it to anyone interested in finding out some background info to their BC campaign... (No pictures though I'm afraid)

I remember freshman year of college, my history professor (who was born and grew up in Tabriz), on the first day of class, told us all about Ibn Battuta's journey. It was all so new to me then! I'd never heard of him until the. Thanks for sharing, hopefully some people learned something new.

(That reminds me, I really want to post up a little something on Nizam al-Mulk in the AAR forum .)

This is interesting, but why doesn't it have the whole text? I was very much looking forward to reading the man's own words, not a paraphrase ...

"If ye love wealth greater than liberty,
the tranquility of servitude greater than
the animating contest for freedom, go
home from us in peace. We seek not
your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch
down and lick the hand that feeds you,
and may posterity forget that ye were
    our countrymen."
    -Samuel Adams
