Aside from the amount of space taken up on the hard drive, has anyone found any problem with using TGA textures in-game rather than DDS (e.g. slowing, etc)?

You can only use DDS with a height x width to the power of two -256x256 (2 to the power of 8), 512x 512 (2 to the power of 9). However, TGA files can be just about any size, and the original game came with quite a few TGA files.

I ask because a 256 texture is too small for the texture I need, while a 512 leaves a lot of empty space and pixelates any 256 texture pieces you try to use on it. It's especially bad in the alpha channel, making the edges look blocky.

An original 256 texture in DDS is around 86 KB, while a TGA of the same size is roughly double that. And while I could make a new 512 texture, it would take a long time and would use nearly twice as much space; an original texture uses 342KB. Whereas a 372 x 372 TGA file, which gives me more than enough space, is only 232KB and I can still use cuts from 256 files without the problems.

It works fine in Max, and doesn't seem to cause any problems in the game that I can see, even while using units with DDS textures at the same time. But maybe it causes problems with large armies? Or slows down the game if too many TGA files are used? Or...?
