    1. build economy first (farms, roads, trade centers, mining)
    2. take over small towns wiht the military you start with
    3. get trade rights with everyone, even if you plan to attack them
    4. tax people just enough so that they dont enter the blue
    5.??????
    6. take over the world

Yeah, as stated above, build economical buildings first, and conquer small settlements. Usually no matter who you are, there is a small enough settlement nearby that you can capture even with just your starting army.

And as tempting as it may to be to train more military so you can capture more territories, don't. You may capture all these places because of your large armies, but you'll quickly find yourself in the red because of all the denarii you have to pay your men. The best thing to do is to build economical buildings first (even if it is just the most basics). From that point, moderate the amount of troops you train, and continue to upgrade your economical buildings.

Take the advice above. My first approach to RTW was to simply play and experience the game. Eventually, you'll discover that building a lot of military is bad and you'll gain valuable insight into basic battle tactics, so you don't have to recruit as many troops.

After you got the basic stuff down, then you can start looking for the real stuff, how the game works and the number crunching, which is what I did. This approach pretty much applies to everything. Play a bit, experience it, then start getting guides, otherwise you wouldn't understand what the heck everybody's talking about.

There are some great tutorials on this site, that teach you the basics. Unfortunately I learned a big military isn't good the hard way...

Hey, I have just bought the game (played it a bit before, re bought it) and I must say that I am overwhelmed. I am the Julii romans, and have spent a good deal of time fighting the Gauls. I can out wit there commanders, but economically, I can't (and won't) raise the armies to crush them. I am playing M/M. My main thing is, whenever I get a Gauls (or any none Roman) town, the cultural penalty kills me, making it so I have to wait, tax them on low, and deal with the eternal blue face. I think I know how to counter this, for it seems that destroying all the buildings with the faction name helps, destroying there shrines helps, and time helps.

Is there anything I am doing wrong? anything that I can do better? If this where Medieval total war 2, I would be fine, but this game is hard. I can't see how you mock the AI, for I fear even though they make big mistakes, they are bringing me down by force of numbers.

Don't destroy buildings unless you go at it slowly. They might still give you bonuses, plus they lose the cultural penalty if you can upgrade them.

Temples can actually give more happiness than the cultural penalty they give, which is only around 5-10%. Most of the cultural penalty comes from the governor's mansion, so once you upgrade that, it's fine.

I've had absolutely no trouble controlling my provinces last I played about a week ago. I was Julii as well so it's just a matter of understanding the game.

Remember to garrison the town up to 80%. Usually after that the town will be fine and won't rebel if you set it to low taxes. If you need to, exterminate and enslave the population. Enslaving's a better option usually unless you really need to get rid of the population to make it happy. Once you get better, you never need to exterminate early in a campaign and certainly don't need to enslave very often either.

    When you start the game:
Economic: Build them in the following order:
    1.Roads
2.Ports(if available in the given settlement)
    3.Trade centers
    4.Market

Roads are very important for the faster transport of your troops. I dont prefer to build farms, cuz it makes the population explode instead of boom and you will find that the cities grow so fast that it will be hard to manage later on. I only make farms when I am playing with germania as an exception in vanilla cuz the pop growth is only 0.5 for most of the towns and all of the towns are towns, so I need to alteast make them minor cities to make good conquering armies. Always when building, give priority to ports, as income from the sea is much more than by roads. Also dont build mines early on as the ai tends to conquer the lands relentessly which has a mine in them, also the mine only give you a reasonable profit only after a certain time. So I only build them when I am sure I can defend that settlement with the garrisoned soldiers.
    Military:
While starting your game, make use of your starting army and lead it with the faction leader and the faction heir, as they will train and gain stars, in addition to this, train a few more units. Dont make more than one standard army in the beginning of the game. Always conquer rebel settlements as soon as possible as you can gain more lands and not declare war with another country.
As you progress, in about the mid game, about ~30 turns, make another army and lead it with your other family member, you can now (seperate the faction leaders and heir with their seperate armies).
Then start conquering. The cities in the middle of the empire, I garrison only with militia, and if I am short of money with peasants, that should be enough for them to hold the seige until relieving units comes to help. Also make sure that you need to only garrison until the public order is 100%.
The cities bordering the other states, I usually have good decent armies garrisoned.
I also tend to take a lazy general and make him go for rebel hunting with some troops. Also make sure that you have some ships in the ports to relieve any bockades as these are very devestating to your economy.

Apply these and your should be conquering the entire map
I was born chivalrous, but situations made me a dreaded.

If you look over at the .org, frogbeastegg's guide is pretty good for beginner's/players of previous TW games.
