Why are you afraid of China?

is it because it's not a 'democracy'? neither are a lot of so called 'democracies' IMO.
is it because of their 'appalling human rights record'? the americans and israelis (both democracies) have done comparably similar things *waterboarding*cough*camp x-ray*cough*
is it because they're not western? a fear of the unknown power that seeks to challenge the world we know?
Let's analyze this fearful and wary zeitgeist so prevalent amongst much of western programs and news channels. It's funny, i find there's a tendency amongst much of the west, to attempt to belittle china's current achievements (shenzhou spacecraft looking like a thunderbirds rocket accordign to a coupla DJs back in '05 being one, i remember), or to monitor china's rise warily with policies of containment.
Now take hollywood films for eg; when was the last time u saw an asian hero who wasnt some sidekick to an anglo bloke? an asian actor playing an asian role where that role didnt call for either:
1)an old mr miyagi karate type
2) asexual nerd
3) asexual generic asian who's the second to die after the black bloke in a film.
now i sense there's a definite fear amongst westerners regarding the chinese, or even asians in general to which there's a strange need by much of western media to portray asians, or chinese in particular unfavourably.

Im so hooking up with p518592. Back on topic Exarch you confuse concern/wariness with fear, nothing to be feared by China as long as the rug can be pulled out from under them by the west. As far as why that concern/wariness is there it is because a country that doesnt even respect the rights of its own citizens should be trusted with a spot of superpower status. And spare the waterboarding nonsense as that is a Bush admin thing not an American thing.

Sums it up, in the US there was an uproar because three non citizens who had been actively trying to kill Americans were water boarded. Would this even make the news, if the PRC let it, in China?

i ask why we in the west fear china, because before i went over there i had the same pre-judgement about the chinese as most of the posters here have; that we should be wary of this 'red storm rising' etc.
when i was there studying, i actually found the chinese to be quite friendly and polite; it never really occurred to me that i was living in a totalitarian state until i found out i couldnt access wikipedia from the net cafe and i had to provie ID (tho, at some net cafes u dont have to).

Now, i may be a cynic because i dont really see that much of a difference in terms of surveillance and erosion of civil liberties, between post-9/11 america (been there too) and PRC china. Given that China has a history of isolationsim (being historically self sufficient), i doubt ppls' fears of chinese invasions and etc-even more so given today's globalised economy.

so personally, i dont fear china (then and again i do live in a backwater), i dont fear chinese invasions-in fact i think china's booming economy is good for australia's economy, given australia's vast mineral and agricultural wealth; it never really occurs to people in oz who talk about how we should invade china (i overheard a bunch of kids from some private school talking on the train about such a thing, as well as sending nuclear waste to china!), that a signifcant amount of our wealth comes from chinese contracts.

Like Bruce Lee? Like the whole wuxia genre, which does fairly well in America? Like the heralding of Kurosawa as one of the best filmmakers of all time? Like the long dalliance of the West with Eastern religions, martial arts, and philosophies? Feng shui? Tai chi?

If anything, the East is often over-hyped.

I think you're looking at everything with an initial resolve to find anti-Eastern bias and unsurprisingly do so.

like the glaring fact that hollywood culturally exploits most of these asian countries ahem remember that cultural atrocity known as 'bride and prejudice'? normally i quite like bollywood films, but that one (a joint hollywood/bollywood venture) was so , i felt like injecting my eyes with heroin for a week after i saw it.
i think ur actually blind to the sensitivites of other ppls' cultural heritage, only able to see things through your own narrow cultural light spectrum. you say the east is often over-hypd; i say your film/media paint an unrealistic romanticised, western-centric view of asia that serves only to entertain and titillate americna audiences-given that most others countries such as australia have cannibalised their own film/art industries in favour of american films/art and free trade, and hence an americaa perspective of the world, i find this quite disconcerting.
i'd actually rather a plethora of foreign and domestic films at the cinema, rathern than a single country's perspective of the world. but that's just me
