Started campaign for England on H/H. Quickly beat Watt, but am immediately in a downward spiral of financial ruin. Seems to be nothing I can do. How do you survive the first few turns?

Cheat.
Seriously, I've read some strategies on saving money by reducing cost, i.e. disbanding armies and unnecessary ships, but they don't often work for me. I often find myself getting overrun.
If you poke around in this forum some you'll find specific advice on getting through the first few turns playing as the English. I'd provide a link but it has been a few months since I seen it.
as the PDF says, start always with no long fighting commitments, build only trade.
check out for money leack from armies camping outside a city etc.
read the pdf twice.
some say to disband the french lands and gift them away. killing some of your nobles helps too... try starting the campaing 10 times and you will get it.

Thanks folks - what .pdf, by the way?
For the DLV Handbook pdf, go here:

It's linked from the main DLV download thread.
You should also try to use your merchants to best effect. Keep an eye out for real money-maker resources, even if they're pretty far away. For England, I found the two spice resources near Venice to be real life savers. At one point I was raking in 5k a turn just from these two (3k from one 2k from the other).
And out of curiosity, do you wait out sieges or assault as soon as you can? Waiting out a siege can very quickly put you into the red.
