Default have you role playing rules?

I like my games sweet and deep.
I mean I dont streamroll enemy, I dont run through a historical game. I role play a bit.

Some of my ideas how to "feel whats like leading Rome"

-I only built a great temple for Jupiter when I achieved a great victory.
When the sicilians fell I felt its time to honour the gods.

-I recalled my greatest general after his victories into Rome for a couple of turns to "have a triumph"

-I only use punishment against cities if they deserved.

-I build forts on certain territories to enclose bad, corrupt generals for their lifetime.

-My general, Cornelius "Victor" ("Sicilianus" should be added too)
has a unique bodyguard troop, a syracusean hoplite band. They look very royal with their violet cloacks. I assign unique troops to Rome and important personalities. These troops are limited no matter how much can I train, and I only use them in key moments, or moments of danger.

quis enim dubitat quin multis iam saeculis, ex quo vires illius ad Romanorum nomen accesserint, Italia quidem sit gentium domina gloriae vetustate sed Pannonia virtute

Yup, I do the same thing -- I only build 'monuments' when I have a great victory to celebrate

I recalled my greatest general after his victories into Rome for a couple of turns to "have a triumph"
I have a personal house rule -- whenever a faction heir becomes the faction leader, he has to return to the capital to be 'crowned' -- regardless of what he's doing...

Yes! I had a great Bosporan king who had a unit of Sarmatian lancers who became his bodyguard -- they stayed with him his entire career, and whenever a battle was in doubt, he would charge into the fray with his Sarmatians!

I have rules that make the game a real challenge. Its already challenging. I slow down conquest, I play historically. And my main goal is to put the roman empire to its orginal borders. Then after I expand to the whole world.

I know what you mean. I do the same thing:

Recall old diplomats to the capitol

    Have favorite armies

Create Rapid response division and armies

Even used the praetorian guard for "domestic defense"

Raze and exterminate other nations that messed with me

And i don't even like role playing games. I guess if you can add value to the game, y the heck not?

    How existential:hmmm::hmmm:

-I usually create 20 diplomats to serve as the Senate when I'm playing Carthage. When I have an important decision I write down possible decisions and roll a die or flip a coin to represent letting the Senate decide.
-I keep an elite army with the faction leader and heir that serve the ceremonial service of defending the capital.
-I take my time with expansion
-I only exterminate overly defiant cities and enslave any non Hellenic or Roman city when I'm playing a civilized faction.
-When playing Rome or Carthage, family members serve as generals while governors rule provinces. When playing as any other state, the family rules representing the aristocracy/ruling family and I recruit generals.
-I have a few units in every province that move around the province to simulate patrols.
-Only build ships at important cites.

I only do it as Rome or Carthage and it can be a pain in the arse but it adds to the depth. Usually it's a simple yes/no answer so a flip of a coin suffices.

Hmmm...as a 1-turn player, role playing is easy and very rewarding. I'm a hard core type and stickler for historical representation on the battlefield...

    - Use General cam for a refreshing historical simulation in a RTS game, kinda. Yes, its difficult but its puts you in the seat of the battle and makes you really use your troops wisely. Your general really has to act the part. Once you get use to using general cam, its alot of fun. Minimal UI helps if you need to extra field of vision.

    - Also, to help out in general cam mode, putting troops under A.I. control can be good sometimes and let you concentrate on a specific part of the battlefield, but use that choice with caution. We know how that can turn out:
"Hey, look at those elite spearmen advancing towards us! What will we do, sir?"
"Our elite heavy infantry is standing there and fresh, but, lets send in our cavalry in a frontal attack!"
    "You sure, sir?"
"Yes! Make sure the general is in the front too!"

    - If your PC can handle it, use unlimited men on the battlefield. If you think your army can defeat those two full stacks, prove it! Awesome glory or complete defeat is yours! Its your fault if you walk into an ambush where your outnumbered, which brings me to...

    - ...spies/intelligence is your friend. Proper intelligence on enemy strengths, weaknesses, troop types, positioning, camps, etc...could have saved alot of misfortunes in classical warfare.

    - Always use house rules!!!!!! Roman armies with more than 10 legions is just plain wrong, but entire armies consisting of legions?!?! Shame on you! Same goes with other factions fielding a majority of elite units. Keep it down and you can really enjoy the game.

I play this way a majority of the time. Battles are decisive and often conclusive as they were in real life. Keeps you, and the A.I. from expanding too fast and the game becoming boring...

Well, one of my legions consist of
    4-5 legionary (currently early legionaries)
    -1-2 hoplite spear infantry
    -auxilia cavalry
-velites, light infantry, mercenaries like slingers

I have four legion, which means four moving armies with at least four legionary troops in each one. Two in Carthage, one in Sicily, one in Italy. I prefer not to make more till my Empire doesnt grow further.
