I'll leave out BI mods for this,

    1. OVERALL gameplay (how fun is it)
Roma Surrectum, Rise of Persia, Europa Bararorum, in this order. Roma Surrectum allows you to really learn how to play with the troops and tactics. I love the map, the units, the factions. RoP has a very cool campaign dynamic as well as a cool setting. I love it. EB is good once you get rolling, and you feel very good if you succeed in even the smallest way.

    2. best focus on Rome Roma Surrectum, hands down. 35 unique legions!
    3. best focus on Greek cities (any of them, Sparta, Athens) Rise of Persia for earlier time. I don't really like EB's Greek things, but they're certainly the most accurate for now. I'll say XGM.
    4. complexity Europa Barbarorum, follwed by a long ways by Roma Surrectum.
    5. unit details Roma Surrectum and EB are tied. When RS2 is released it will have the best skins in the community imo.
    6. historical accuracy Europa Barbaroum (for the detail, not necesarly the accuracy). RS2 will be excellent in terms of units and factions etc
    7. historical events included EB
    8. graphical elaboration (unit details, fanciness, etc.) Roma Surrectum. Best map and best units in the community.
    9. battle AI SPQR and RS
    10. campaign AI No idea.
    11. campaign map (elements, details, accuracy, overall territory) Roma Surrectum followed by EB. RS has a huge map that allows you to choose your moves carefully, and it has the best textures. EB's map looks like vomit in some cases, but it's well made if you ignore the iffy look.
    12. playable (new) factions Roma Surrectum for Greekness, EB for barbarians
    13. character traits and retinue, character development EB
    14. replayability RS.

    1. OVERALL gameplay (how fun is it)
I would go for EODII and FATW; both are "fantasy mods" and the "fun factor" is immense.
    2. best focus on Rome
SPQR and RS. I'm hearing very good things for RS2.
    3. best focus on Greek cities (any of them, Sparta, Athens)
    XGM
    4. complexity
    EB; a whole new game.
    5. unit details
That is a matter of personal taste; EB, FATW, RTR but there are really very gifted skinners in the community; if you don't mind the absence of campaign map NTW2 is excellent
    6. historical accuracy
    EB
    7. historical events included
    EB
    8. graphical elaboration (unit details, fanciness, etc.)
    See 5 above.
    9. battle AI
    10. campaign AI
For battle AI, Darth, Sinhuet have both made excellent modifications that many mods share or have adapted. For campaign AI given the limitations of the game's engine you have to go for heavy scripting and probably go for some sub-mod like the various money scripts.
    11. campaign map (elements, details, accuracy, overall territory)
I like EB; others disagree especially with the sea...
    12. playable (new) factions
EOD, FATW: it's only "new" factions...
    13. character traits and retinue, character development
    EB again
    14. replayability
The mod I played the longer was RTR (Platinum); but I guess the one I wanted to replay more was EOD...

    2. best focus of Rome

If you have the Barbarian Invasion add-on, then I would like to recommend Fall of the Republic - Rise of the Empire (FRRE). There are currently two mods: 77BC and 58BC. They are historical campaigns covering the events from just after Sulla up to the rise of Julius Caesar.

    Here is the FRRE forum...
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=46

These mods guide you through the history with a series of scripted missions recreating the actual events of the times. There is a very nice mechanism for recruiting entire legions in one go.

First, i should say that if you are looking for an impartial view on this matter then look elsewhere, this is more of a review than the intended comparitives

    1. OVERALL gameplay (how fun is it)
I would like to say EB, but you do have to be a certain level of nerd to find the vast tracts of information-from a page long report on the composition and use of leather armour in ancient noricum to a faction descripition dating back to roughly 8,000bc and describing every harvest season, battle, skirmish, technological advance until 272bc-interesting. I personally am well above the aforementioned level and find it 10 times more fun than even vanilla. 10/10

    2. best focus on Rome
The clues in the name, Europa barbarorum. Not to say it doesnt have more detail and depth on Rome than any other mod, it is just not limited to rome.

    3. best focus on Greek cities (any of them, Sparta, Athens)
XGM, although again the historical accuracy would be better in EB

    4. complexity
EB, an entire rewrite of the game and an entirely new in-depth but intuitive system.

    5. unit details
Some (a huge amount over the entire development) of the best artists in the biz for EB make it... beyond beautiful.

    6. historical accuracy
    EB, nuff said.

    7. historical events included
Year in history and of course the rest of the mod's general historical theme make the answer to this obvious.

    8. graphical elaboration (unit details, fanciness, etc.)
    See answer (5)

    9. battle AI
Again, entire rewrite from the best AI mods/scripters available.

    10. campaign AI
(3 guesses which mod )1.1 is apparently pretty good, although there are a few small glitches in 1.0 and i don't have a huge amount of experience in campaign AI as i usually play on easy.

    11. campaign map (elements, details, accuracy, overall territory)
Entire retexturing, bigger, more area, geological history studies to get the lakes and snowline within centimetres of what they were in the time period...

    12. playable (new) factions
All factions playable, all are pretty much new compared to vanilla although you do have a few factions removed (numidia, thrace, 3 of the Roman factions to make way for Saba and the new gaul tribe)

    13. character traits and retinue, character development
You could write an entire biography of any character in EB by the time they are 30, the amount of completely new traits and ancillaries there are.

    14. replayability
So many factions, so many options, although EB campaigns do take an almost ridiculous amount of time for people like me who prefer a slow build up, making it hard to get to the 'replaying' stage at all.
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

    1. OVERALL gameplay (how fun is it) -- SPQR
    2. best focus on Rome -- SPQR
    4. complexity -- EB
    5. unit details -- EB
    6. historical accuracy -- EB
    7. historical events included -- EB
    8. graphical elaboration (unit details, fanciness, etc.) -- EB
    9. battle AI -- SPQR
    10. campaign AI -- SPQR
    11. campaign map (elements, details, accuracy, overall territory) -- SPQR
    12. playable (new) factions -- Chivalry Total War
    14. replayability -- SPQR

That said, I only play SPQR and occasionally Chivalry total war. EB has a lot of detail but the campaign is dreadfully slow between turns, and I care for gameplay over realistic armour and such.

SPQR has a different kind of realism, it is a sort of gameplay realism. When I play, it feels like I'm the emperor, not some person playing a game. The battles feel like I'm a general commanding my legion against the massive horde of barbarians.

Default Re: WHICH IS THE BEST RTW MOD EVER?

for me, europa barbarorum is the most fun, and most historically accurate.. with the other mods i never really bothered to play more then one campaign, now i have only eb installed

about slowness, i used to play it on 512mb ram, it was slow as hell.. but if you have 2gb, which now isnt really an imposible thing to do, ram is cheaper then bread.. it will go as fast as any other mod
