The best RTR version

Hi RTW and RTR fans.

I've been playing RTW since the beginning, and I'd like to mod up my vanilla game to get more of it, and I've heard that RTR is one of the best mods. Although I recognized, that there are a lots of RTR mods

Which one do you recommend? Which is the best in terms of:
- campaign map
- enemy (campaign and battle) AI
- unit details
- character development
- settlement buildings
- historical accuracy

If you are interested in this and like to play as Rome I would suggest Imperator II. In general for better AI be on the lookout for mod based on BI or which run with the BI .exe (pure RTR does, and probably many of the sub-mods).

For old RTR, it's AEE I think. limes is working on many new units with more detailed and accurate appearance. But genereally speaking, the unit look in RTR-PE is as just plain as EB's - you can't have any more with the low texture resolution.

This mod makes many advantages of the BI.exe (including better AI and three more factions (Britons, Galatians and Epirus))

And (as AqD said): TIC

You can instal those two in the same folder. They both use the -mod switch tool.

The major as been mentioned:

AAE (About everything is changed, many more units, new map etc. Check the subforum)

Imperator II (The hardest mod around, focuses on Rome)

RTR: PE (Plain old RTR, as it is intended to be. Could be a good start to use since it's the basic)

ExRM (Adding on to PE, new units and factions)

The order I would suggest you play them in:


RTR VII : The Iberian Conflict
It will blow your mind compared with Vanilla, Highest quality RTR mod in all aspects, but not very replayable.


Fall of the Republic - Rise of the Empire (FRRE)
This is a mod that uses the RTR as a base but has individual campaigns such as Ceasars invasion of Gaul. Good campaigns, great scripting, poor unit quality, and not very replayable.


Imperator II
This is a submod that one of the RTR developers made that focuses on Rome.
Very difficult, has decent scripting, good units, uses Barbarian Invasion engine features (like religion, civil wars etc.) It allows for a very long campaign, but only with Rome.

RTR 6-Platinum Edition (Barbarian Invasion Engine)
Extremely replayable, many tweaker mods (Ancient Empires, Metro-Naval, Extended Realism) Lacks scripting and BI features (unless using one of the mentioned tweaker mods)



If you follow this order you will sample the the wine and caviar versions of RTR and then get to the meat and potatos at the end.

If you can get a copy of RTW patched to 1.2 then you have to try RTR 6 Gold; the granddaddy of all the current RTR based games (bar TIC, which is a completely new beast!). Even with the old siege bug it's one of the finest Rome mods ever produced and still plays a mean campaign.

A matter of personal taste try them both out and find out for yourself.

Personally I think EB is more polished overall but this is only natural, as the current version of RTR is practically 2 years old, while EB 1.0 just came out a few months ago. On the other hand I cannot run EB 1.0 on my system, since it is a bit obsolescent, and EB is very taxing on system resources, keep that in mind if you have an old rig.

As your topic about the comparisson of EB and RTR has just been closed an hour ago, I don't think this is a smart question. Both mods are awesom and the only way to know wih one is the best, would be to try them yourself

RTRPE (the one to use with 1.5) and EB can happily coexist on the same install of RTW so there is no need to chose one instead of the other

True, but make sure you get the -mod switch version, otherwise EB doesn't work and maybe even RTR not as well

yes, i know the current version, but it needs 1.5 patch, which couldn't be installed on my vanilla.

Update to RTR 5.41 the go look around for a mini mod called Roma Mod by Bouis.

That is the best of all RTR mods .. period !
