No, though they have a relatively low lethality (they are more likely than other units to knock infantry down rather than kill them).

1B. Do phalnax units get a penalty fighting other infantry when they are using swords instead of their spears?

No.

2. Do simple spear units get a penalty fighting other infantry?

Yes. They have better defense against cavalry, and lower defense against infantry.

3. Do cavalry that use spears get a penalty fighting infantry?

No, though spears typically have a higher charge value, while swords have a higher attack value. With units that have both you should charge with spears, but switch to swords in a sustained melee.

Hold down the alt key and attack to use secondary weapons - works with all unit types that have two weapons (you can use it to order legionaries to attack without throwing pila for example).
