    Default role-playing

When you guys say role-playing, what do you mean... do you mean like you make his acts as your would make yours? like he is the YOU in the game????

I've never liked any of my generals enough to do that. How do you guys get hooked on the generals, cause it sounds like more fun when you try to personally develop a general.

its not so much about roleplay only, its more about not wanting to win the game I think. you can blitz the whole campaign in about 100 turns and would not remember a single event or battle, while you can play a slow game, that never comes close to any winning conditions but has numerous epic events, treaties, wars, battles, marriages.

Roleplay wise I usually play the whole faction based on a stereotype. the danish dread vikings, the egypt chivalric rulers, the spanish reconquista type.

Sometimes a character is suddenly appealing from the traits or sometimes his position on the campaign map.

I remember that my byzantine empire got 2 generals from Smyrna who led the eastern campaign until Antioch against the turks and egypt. I really did not bother much about the west during their campaign. They both had their stacks and they covered each others moves all the time. Both were the same age and basically could have been friends, nobles in service of the Emperor. I really took interest in their fate so I really tried to play them the best way I could, focusing more on their moves than I did on the economy, other fronts, etc.

I also try to give diplomacy a lot of room and try to stick to diplomatic treaties as good as I can.

I also sometimes change politics if certain events take place. your arch enemy has a new king, can mean peace, your faction has a new king, that can mean lesser wars, but more cultural and economical development (and that policy shift is sometimes really hard to do, especially if 3 generations of kings pissed of every one around you against your faction)

My games are usually hotseat games, which helps a lot when you want to roleplay a conflict over a whole region or have more controlled enviroment. I find it annoying when I want to roleplay a certain general, or theatre of action and then some level 1 assassin ends all dreams our of nowhere...

You should try the Deus lo vult mod (the newest is DLV 5.4, that goes with Kingdoms) . It has a lot of roleplaying features, like deciding whether your general will be a commander or a governor.

    simply : use less generals.

In most of my campaigns, i used the king and his heir all the time -> so they had a lot to do.

So with time, YOU develop the generals and a certain relation to them.
Do they get dread ? (execute and exterminate=> acting cruel)
Are they chivalrous? (release prisoners, occupy, act friendly etc)
Are they bad at something? (like the heir in kingdoms:byzanz has poor speaker trait- "those banners are really nice, aren't they?"
do they drink too much, do they curse ?
    ...etc...

and that are the basic things... you can go advanced with retinues and other stuff like crusading or dying or autoresolve-losing several battles ...and much more stuff.

the only thing about hostseat, is that if your army gets engaged to another faction's while it is none of your turns, the battle if auto-resolved, and I had a small stack moving across to take a poorly defended settlement, when a full stack attacked, and the sad thing is, I always leave enough move points to be able to withdraw, but it didn't work.

I'm playing as the scots, my ancestors, and my general David Canmore came of age with 3 chivalry, 5 command, 7 loyalty and 4 piety. I've basically given him a lot of special attention. It's fun. He single handedly ran the english out of the British Isles.

well you can play defensive battles in Hotseat modus, just not when one human controlled faction attacks another human controlled faction. But if the AI attacks you, you can fight on the battle map without problems. Even ambushes are handled accordingly

    Hey,

I will keep this short and sweet, as Samir's awesome post covered alot of how we can get attached to a character in game.

I take great intrest in both the king and prince, and almost always have them in the same legion fighting side by side. i suppose this enhances the roleplaying experience as they are father and son and are sharing epic events together.

I often find myself, projecting myself into either of thier shoe's and thinking my son fought valiantly in this battle and makes me proud this day. like the bond between them grows with each event they go through together.

When my king's children come of age, i can't wait to see what they have inherited from there father/mother and what qualities make them unique. as for general's with no ties to the royal family, i look differently upon them and see myself as the king judging their qualities and see a man striving to be great and do great things for the empire, so i set more important tasks for them. and anticipate welcoming him into the royal family and perhaps oneday become king.

Well, so much for short and sweet

Its fun to make your King into a tyrant (high dread) early game, when he's 40ish, then later when he is 60ish make him pay the Pope, make less wars, release prisoners and occupy settlements to make him into a chivalrous King. Almost like hes repenting before he dies

I sort of play the role of several historians that record information about the happenings of the empire and the biographies of the general. And I "narrate" a fictional history book in my head as I manage my empire.

    Thanks guys.

Maybe I'll try out Cmdr_Sdxo's way of doing things, cause since I'm playing as the scots, and they are my ancestors ( i love my families history). Maybe I'll make some NEW history, lol.
