After a great response and succes in thread about AI formations,i want to thank and reward BC modders for their magnificent work. One of the most untold stories about Total war series are origins of this game. The main idea for this great game came from the two main sources: Civilization and Wargaming series. The idea was to combine Civilization system of building empires and strategic part from Wargaming. About Civilization i think that everybody already knows enough but about "Wargaming" surprisingly nothing.
Well, the story about wargamming begins in 19th century in Germany.
Modern wargaming grew out of the military need to study warfare and to 'reenact' old battles for learning purposes. The stunning Prussian victory over the French in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) is sometimes partly credited to the training of Prussian officers with the Kriegspiel.
H.G. Wells' book Little Wars was an attempt to codify rules for fighting battles with toy soldiers (miniatures), and make them available to the general public.
Wargames have existed for centuries—chess is an ancient example. In fact, one could make a case that all competitive games which have a winner and loser may be considered wargames.
History records many Wargame successes during World War II, but perhaps none was more impressive than America's naval victory over Japan. Our wartime Pacific commander, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz explained to a Naval War College class in 1960 that, "the war with Japan had been reenacted in the game rooms here by so many people and in so many different ways that nothing happened during the war that was a surprise - absolutely nothing except the kamikazes towards the end of the war!!!".
Except for the personal pleasure, the game and the books to the game also provides first class informations about warfare, history and tactics.I started to play this game before i even heard about total war series. After i discovered Medieval i was really pleasantly surprised,it was like wargamming in 3D but with the Rome and Medieval 2 things are getting more simpler(dumber?) and most of all unrealistic.
Because all of that i decided to intoduce you to this great game and to give you one of the best existing books on medieval period:
"Byzantium beyond the golden gate"
