    Default I'm in big trouble...

    Hi all,

Playing DLV 5.4 Hotfix2, with Isilendil Submod.
    HRE, VH/VH, year 1254.

That the point : I've been allied with Papal States, with "friendship" level of relationship with that faction. Then start the Age of Darknes, and suddenly Papal States attack me, to take Florence. So I'm de facto excommunicated, and the papal states doesn't want any peace proposal since then (even with giving them a town or money... I've been crusaded on Milan in 1242, and I'm almost considered like an Islamic faction in the Middle of the catholics ones...

Does anyone of you could help me, maybe I need to know a tip to make peace with the papal states and then stop being the black sheep of the christians factions ? Because, at that pace, I do not know how long I will be able to cope with my dearest catholics friends... Moreovre, I can only contemplate, the ever growing Turkish kingdoms, looming to the Western doors, and, as usual, nobody caring of it lol !

    Cheers

Destroy the Papal States and whoever else is attacking you.

During the dark ages diplomacy won't work. You need to wait out the first dark age before you can make peace with the pope (roughly 20 turns or so).

During the dark age the pope will attack you if Florence or Naples is not garrisoned enough. As so many factions declare war on you your overall strengh declines and his holiness will take the opportunity no matter what standing you have.

The good news is that you can conquer Rome during this dark age and you don't need to return it afterwards, even if you make peace with the pope again. About excommunication, either your faction leader or the pope must die before you will be reconciled, at least during the dark age. Afterwards you can buy reconciliation with a large sum of money. Right now you should be around -25k florins, plagued and besieged, so killing the pope is prolly cheaper.

since this thread is op anyway, I would like to ask what exactly this dark age event is. as far as I have heard it causes all factions to target the player and when or how exactly does it occur? thanks for the tip about naples btw.

The "Dark Age(s)" is (are) scripted periods in which defined factions declare war on each other. You can find the script in campaign_script.txt. It has a time limit and starts with a world wide plague roughly around yer 1220/25, affecting both the Ai and the player. Diplomacy will mostly not work during this time.

The reason behind the script is (imo) that in older DLV versions the AI often failed to target and attack the player, mostly due to his overall military power, which lead to pretty boring campaigns. Even if you are at war with a faction there is still a chance that it will not attack you if your region military strengh is high enough and it's units are busy somewhere else.

The details which factions attack each other are in the campaign script. You can also check the diplomacy message(s) at the start of the dark age. It's not only the player who gets a beating.
