    Default Building Forts

No, this not about the debate of permanent forts or whatnot. It's a question. This is probably just a general TW question, but seeing as I am using SS right now and it pertains to the map of SS, I thought I'd post it here.

There is something that doesn't really make sense to me when dealing with forts. I understand that it doesn't make sense to be able to build one in the middle of a forest, but I find lots of other odd places where I can't build one. There is a strip of land between two rivers (that have river crossings) in the Antwerp region where you can't build a fort. It would seem to me that it is the perfect place for a fort and there doesn't seem to be any obstacles for it... it would seem realistically that I could and would built a for there.

    Any reason that you can't?

maybe there are hidden characters nearby, or watchtowers very close to the fort...

I don't think so. Because there are lots of places where I can't do it. I have a watcher tower in the area, but its about five to six spaces away from where I want to build the fort. It seems to generally when it abuts a river, but then other places don't work either.

That's odd.. but happens sometimes to me too, but I never tried building a fort there... so I don't really know... Might start a HRE campaign to find it out

There's actually a bunch of places in that region that I would love to build them but can't. There is bridge in the southern part of the Antwerp Region that leads to Metz which would be nice to block off with a fort, but I can't built one that blocks the path through (on either side of the Bridge) within two or three spaces of it.

However, this leads me to a question. How large of an area does a fort block off. In other words, if I build a fort how many spaces can there be between it an an impassable obstacle (like a mountain) so that the enemy can't get by without sieging the fort?

I don't know. I've been able to place three next to bridges (like right next to the bridge blocking the road through).

Plus, it just doesn't make sense realistically to need two all around or even one. You should need an empty space (perhaps even with one tree), nothing more.

I am always trying to use the fort on a resource exploit but it never works =(.

it won't let me build there.

    That's what I thought, thanks.

Now... why won't it let me built my fort on that peninsula?

Of that i have no clue

What I wish is that forts would stop all foreign characters for good and not let them pass

Yeah, but that isn't really realistic either. Not unless there is an ancient Customs and Border Protection agency.

It'd be nice though. I just stick an assassin near/in the fort so when a character wanders it, he gets the axe.

I would use it to keep out unwanted merchants and other religion priest and spies would really have to sneak in (my borders all have forts at all the ways in) (if it can be done with in reason)

Yeah, I can't either. I suspect it's because of the mountain that is there (and extends, sloping to the coast). You could, however, build a fort on the other side of the crossing.

I haven't tried it in this one yet (which I suppose I should considering the boost to resource trade $$$), but in the Vanilla version it worked me on the gold in Timbuktu. I had 20 merchants on both gold spots.
