    okay, so here's the thing

    let's assume the following:
    - you became a powerful christian empire;
    - you hold rome and train tons of bishops;
    - you would like to gain influence in the holy church, and eventually to have your cardinal elected to papacy (let's not mention all the advantages attached)

    there's a funky way to do that: kill off each pope, who isn't "yours" or who dislikes you, until you gain majority in the pope election.

    but what's the problem with that? don't you find it totally lame, (not to mention unethical, historically inaccurate) that you can do that without any serious consequences / responses from other christian factions?

    just chasin' and huntin' down the freakin head of the whole christian world from turn to turn? 6 in a row? come on, that's genocide, besides ridiculous.

    I remember doing that in my Danish campaign. I assassinated him each time though, not battled him.

    I tried that, but eventually he started popping up in different regions, lol, and I sitll had rome teaming with assassins.

    That's happened to me once, but I found him in North Africa and eliminated him anyway.

    Another good question: why does the pope pop up in regions other than Rome?

    It would be a cool mod to "imprison" the papacy in an optional settlement when your political, military and ecclesiastical power is very high, just like the French kings did during the Avignon Papacy. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avignon_Papacy )

    Enforcing them to become a vassal doesn't work, even if he's only with his sole bodyguard unit and I surround him with thousands of soldiers.

    Anyone here in twcenter who could vassal the pope?

    The Pope is a game within a game. Playing the Pope game is the second best part of the game and has eternal rewards (as does everything else).

    The pope is only good for Assassin training
